By portable WIFI device, are referring to something like an iPad with cellular capabilities? What else would take a SIM card? And isn't an iPhone or other similar cell phones "portable WIFI devices"? I am probably missing something here but I cant see how lugging around a larger iPad would be better than an unlocked iPhone or a local cell phone option.

Bit late now, but Lebara $39.90 gives phone call credit, sms credit and some data too. I think 1GB, which is a lot.
The others will have monthly prepaid for $30 which will give you phone call credit, sms credit and data. 500mb for these.
Don't get the long life ones, ie, $30 for 6 months, as these have data charges of $2 per mb. Not worth it, esp Optus and Telstra long life sim.
There are websites of the majors, http://www.optus.com.au/prepaid

You will need to bring along your passports as id.

Lebara have upped their data allowance, up to 2GB.
$10/$20 a month, much cheaper than Optus or Telstra.

Personally I've used Optus with their $2 a day, but it depends really how much data you use. 500mb a day isn't that bad. I've used my 500 mb as a hotspot for my LOCKED iPhone 5 (to Facetime my swim team in the USA), Google maps to make sure I was heading to the right gelato place in Surry Hills, iMessaging, Facebooking. (Warning: It can be $4 if you go over 500mb and then capped at 1GB a day)
Originally I liked Vodafone, but they got rid of their unlimited social media data (for Facebook Mobile) and I realized it was a rip off when I was making international calls back home. (back in the times when I had only one iPhone).
I think data is the most important thing to consider, but that was because I was iPhone reliant because I was constantly iMessaging my coach the whole time (in the US).
