What advantage would be achieved by comping now and flying CO during the double EQM promotion period instead of waiting until the second half of the year and having one's status comped through the end of February 2011?

Advantage: Flying with elite status from day 1 on CO, for upgrades, bonus RDM, 500 mile minimum, while using the DEQM period and the rest of 2009 to earn status for the 2010-Feb 2011 status year.
Even if you'd get CO elite status from the flights you'd do during the DEQM period, it would be nice to have it during those flights.

I guess my point is that you're wasting money to fly CO during the DEQM period if you can time your comp request to assure status through the end of February 2011 anyway. Since the DEQM promotion doesn't award you bonus redeemable miles, flying on CO solely to rack up extra elite qualifying miles would do little other than to lighten your wallet. Even if you have need to fly CO anyway, you can still credit the miles to your WorldPerks account and get the same impact, while taking advantage of all the exiting benefits of elite reciprocity. Since there is no reason to believe that upgrade reciprocity and other benefits won't extend through at least through the end of June (and, most likely, all the way through October 24), a NW flyer looking to make the jump via a comp might as well wait until July 1 or after.
Now you can earn up to triple Elite qualification miles for every Northwest and Delta flight you purchase and fly between March 23 and June 15, 2009. KLM trans-Atlantic and India flights will also be eligible for this offer. See below for full terms and conditions.
You will need to register prior to travel to be eligible for this promotion.
Then start racking up the miles toward Elite status, which enables you to enjoy exclusive perks like complimentary upgrades, priority boarding, mileage bonuses, preferred seating and WorldClubs® discounts.
Here's how it works:Members purchasing premium fares will earn triple flown miles toward Elite status, members purchasing discounted economy fares will earn double flown miles toward Elite status, and members purchasing deeply discounted fares will earn the actual flown miles toward Elite status for all flights purchased and flown between March 23 and June 15, 2009. See Terms and Conditions below for more detail. ......

Validity: Members must book and purchase tickets between March 23, 2009 and June 15, 2009 to be eligible for the offer.
Another example of taking your best customers for granted. I know they are dong this to increase sales, but not smart to tick off your already angered elites who have bought tickets ahead of this.

AA and UA's offers have the same restriction...The "Best" customers are the ones who buy the higher priced fares, and they are being rewarded with 3x EQMs, more than UA or AA or CO (2x EQMs over there)...so how is this ticking off your "best customers"?

You "best" customers are ones who give you all or most of their business and who frequently buy their tickets ahead of time.

I'm afraid I have to disagree. If I fly once a year on a cheap fare purchased six to nine months in advance, I doubt I'm any airline's "best customer". Even if that airline receives 100% of my business, every year.

I think this is more accurate. I'd expand on this by saying that your best customers are the ones who bring you the most profit. That might be by buying very expensive fares or buying many many cheap (yet profitable) fares.
I run a business and I judge my best customers as the ones who give me the most profit over the long term.
The triple-mile promotions area mainly fare classes you could refund and rebook anyway. All four of my upcoming itins are LTK class so wouldn't have been eligible to begin with, and not sure even if I'd known I should have paid the price differential just for the double EQM.
Might be worth a B fare to Asia to hit Plat ... well ... now.

DL-NW's promotion provides no bonus for most customers -- in other words, DL is not matching AA/UA and is instead offering a promotion that won't provide much if any benefit for most customers.
Zero status bonus from this DL-NW promotion on most ticketed fares sold is going to be the story of the day for most DL-NW customers.
AA, CO, UA and US are offering double status miles on all ticketed fares purchased and flown through about mid-June. DL-NW are not offering this.
