Which direction do flights land at Svalbard - Longyearbyen
Does anyone know which way airplanes land at LYR airport?
Left to right, or right to left (More or less) - per Google Earth
Or does this vary by day?
I couldn't quite determine from the photo on Wikipedia.
So as to determine the ideal side of aircraft to sit on and look out!
Just booked my flights - most Northerly airport in the world!!

Aircraft land into wind, or as close into wind as possible. So it will depend on the wind direction on the day.
I can't remember if there is a "prevailing wind" up there (I was only there once, and that was nearly 20 years ago). Suggest you monitor weather sites for a while to see if there is a pattern.
BTW, LYR is not the most northerly airport in the world. There is at least one that is further north, Ny Alesund, also in Svalbard.

thanks...ok...it's the most northerly with regularly scheduled commercial / tourist service!
I check Alesund and it says charter flights only. Lufttransport doesn't even offer an option to buy a ticket. Must go through the company - King's Bay.
