OSL Change Flights
Hello Experts,
I have a question regarding arrival-derparture times @ OSL.
We will arrive on the 13th of august, 2014 by Lufthansa LH860 from Frankfurt. The scheduled time of arrival is 12:00pm. Our onward flight would be SAS SK4112 at 13:05 to Bodo (BOO) or Norwegian DY346 at 13:20 to Bodo as well. As far as I know both airlines operates from OSL not RYG.
But as I need to grab our checked-in baggages and check-in to our onward flight (I don't know if online check-in is available at SAS/Norwegian or not, as I have not bought the tickets yet, but still we need to drop our checked-in bags off as well), do you think its possible to reach our flight or I should choose a latter flight (in which case, we will miss our ferry in Bodo by the way).
I have checked minimum connection times here and it says 60 minutes for International-Domestic. What do you guys think, do you have any experience on this?
Thank you!

That's incorrect. In Norway you clear customs at your point of entry, so through check will only give you luggage checked to the final destination. As I don't travel domestically in Norway I can't opine on the check-in cut off but I'd say the OP is leaving it very tight and risks misconnecting, and at worst, have to buy a new ticket. Buyer beware!

MCT at OSL is no more than an hour - I know this for sure because I had a one hour connection through OSL a little while ago. I didn't have checked baggage, but the booking system wouldn't have known this!
I found the connection to be tight even without checked baggage, but if you book with LH/SK as a single ticket then your connection is protected... which it wouldn't be if your onward flight was booked separately. So - I would definitely go for the LH/SK option, making sure you book it as one ticket. You'll either make it, or they'll rebook you on the next available flight at no cost.

Both SK and DY has online check-in and self-service bagdrop, the only queue you're likely to meet before gate is security. You'll be traveling through while the final holiday week in Norway is underway, which means potentially some extra traffic, but in the middle of the day (off-peak runs until 13:00 earliest) it shouldn't be too bad. I'd say 25 minutes is the worst case of security wait. You'll have your bags within 20 minutes too. Maximum walking distance to a domestic gate from security at OSL is 10-15 minutes. Even with a slight delay you'll make it, with SK that is. They could accept your bags even if check-in closed 5 minutes ago. Norwegian will be more strict. If you connect from within Star Alliance, SAS are likely to wait for you if they are on top of the systems — however, seeing as it is the end of summer, you can't count on it and should ask LH to hook you up with connecting tickets to be certain you'll get rebooked if a potential delay is severe. OSL is a rather small airport and SK an airline that knows its only lifeline in competition with DY is loyalty and service, together they're as safe as a tight transfer can be. On a normal day I transfer through to domestic gate with a Schengen passport, rechecked baggage, in 35 minutes. I can't say I walk slow though, but I certainly don't powerwalk either. As long as you know self-service bagdrop is at section D and F you're far ahead of the masses that actually need 60 minutes, to have time for their shopping.

I travel a lot domestically in Norway, and I am well familiar with INT/DOM connection at OSL. LH/DY on separate tickets is doable, but risky. LH/SK is much safer, but get your luggage checked through. If you miss the connection, you will be rebooked. If you make the connection and the luggage cannot, it can be customs cleared in your absense. If you are connecting to the last flight of the day, SK will often suggest that you run for the plane, and leave the luggage to be sent after you. Even though check in time is 30/40 minutes, tagged connecting luggage from international flights is accepted until ~20 min before take off

I do this at OSL every week. 1 hour is enough. LH and SAS are both StarAlliance and they work perfectly together (I think LH will buy SAS soon). In your initiary we also see that they both offer the same flights. You can not tell by your ticket which logo the plane will have.
Here's it put clearly:
- LH will check your luggage all the way to BOO
- At OSL you need to retrieve your checked bags and carry them through customs and into the Arrivals area.
- Max waiting time is 15 minutes for your bags
- Go up to the Check-In desks and leave your bags at the SAS Bag-drop (self-service - almost never any quewes)
- Go through Security Check
- Enter the gates area and find your gate for BOO
Safe trip and welcome to Norway!
