I'm sorry, but that's completely wrong. There is a short section in Ljungby that only has grade separation and a simple divider with 2+1 lanes, but otherwise the E4 has motorway standard from Helsingborg all the way past Stockholm.

The E6, on the other hand, still has stretches of normal non-grade-separated highway in Bohuslän. The last gap there will be filled in 2014.

I've worked many years as a tour guide in Scandinavia and have driven all the major routes between the three countries. The direct route from CPH to ARN is not interesting. It's better, if you have time, to drive along the coast via Kalmar, which includes some nice sea towns. But that really is a two-day trip.

Driving CPH-OSL is not much better. It's only once you get past Oslo that you start hitting some really good scenery.

If you're really set on driving, my advice would be to take the DFDS overnight boat one way to Oslo and drive back to CPH (or vice a versa). The scenery once you enter the Oslo Fjord by boat is much better than what you will see by road and you won't have to repeat an uninspiring drive.

Many thanks for the kind responses, suggestions, and arguments.

I think I have decided to book a roundtrip flight CPH-OSL, rent a car in OSL, and drive to Bergen and back. What do you guys recommend as the best route to Bergen, and estimated time for the journey?

Make sure to do Hardangervidda, incl 3 nice waterfalls one way (Fossen Bratte, Steinsdalfossen and Voringsfossen- the best), which will also give you a ferry ride. Consider the other way to include the 50km+ Laerdalstunnel. Wathc the speed camera mid tunnel!!!

Edit: Tunnel is only half that!!! But only is still the longest road tunnel in the world. (added ?)

It is only 24.5 km long (but still the longest road tunnel in the world and quite an experience to drive).

Thank you My facts got blurred by the flash, which netted me 2000$ cost after one court case (phone interrogation by me). Just remembered it was loooong. Actually the detour around the tunnel is better, but in this case the time wont permit.

Was around 10000 NOK, so only about 1800 USD then.

About 125 km/h in the 80 km/h limit zone midway inside the tunnel.

Took a few years of investigation as the car was neither mine, nor rented. =hard to identify the driver despite the flash.

Pretty impresseive, if that's the right word for it, to catch you then. May I ask how they found you?

In Sweden, AFAIK, they discard all speeding camera photos that aren't clear and easily matched to the owner of ther car or his family.

Was my fathers car, and they eventually found copies of one of my passports to match with. My father was in for questioning, and also the guy that had borrowed the car from him- before they obtained said passport copies. Court ruling on basis of that, as I didnt show up in court.

I paid the fine. Norway and Finland are among worst at speeding tickets in the world. Finland bases it on income, and it can be extreme. Norway does the same only for DUI. Also for tourists.

Color me politically incorrect and/or reckless but I probably have speeding tickets at all continents. Rallies all around the world. Passing a speed control at GPS measured 334 km/h with engine on fire was probably the worst (yes, Porsches have rear engine). Police got more occupied with the fire, and we slipped away to the next country under the excuse of providing more fire equipment. Abandoned the car Had rally support later pick up the car, and had Porsche guarantee pay new engine (modified 997 turbo). After a few laps at Hungaroring this was along the Balaton lake.

.... thus the "masked drivers" getting away.

Even with the ability to identify drivers in Sweden, recently some enforcement for moving violations caught by camera had become unenforceable if the judges were in compliance with the full body law. I'm not sure if the loophole allowing that escape has been closed as of yet or not, but it has in recent months saved a few people some money and encouraged some speeding by some crafty attorneys.

Norway is a money-eating monster when it comes to penalties for moving violations. The fines here for such violations are more ridiculous than any of my visited countries which don't imprison debtors and/or deny passports on the basis of civil debts.

That said, someone has to fund the public transport buses and bridges to "nowhere" in Norway, since so much of the granted Norwegian oil money has been put away in huge sovereign wealth funds.

Actually the easiest place to get them. Step 1 read the forum on FT and get there, step 2 drive anything there without pre approved written permission (like a snowmobile at 5 km/h) and you will be fined according to international conventions when you get home.

Thanks for all the recommendations, I posted a summary of my trip in the Trip Reports. Fantastic drive, just didn't allow myself enough time to enjoy it!

A Journey to Scandinavia (no hotel or flight pics, just scenery, photo intense)
