Airport caterers allegedly smuggling cocaine into SYD

Details are sketchy but I heard on our 6pm National Nine news today that our Federal Police arrested 2 airport catering company workers "under the wing of a United plane" in Sydney today for smuggling large quantites of cocaine. The cocaine was found in the catering trolleys that had come off the plane, using specially trained sniffer dogs.

It was not clear from reports if the drugs actually came off the UA plane, or another plane, but the SYD based workers were detained under the UA wing.

Anyone else heard more about this?

I guess that is one way for UA to get some Australian publicity .

Thanks for the links. Our news bulletin maybe spoke out of turn, but they definitely said "under the wing of a United plane". Oops .

I am attuned to anything "United".

So that's why I couldn't get any sleep on my last flight out of SYD. I thought that white stuff I sprinkled on my chicken and pasta was just salt.... lousy caterers...

Wow! It could be getting a real problems for against those 3 caterers gotten arrested as charge with possessions of cocaine and trying to sneaks through past from security checks. That's why Federal police is failed to trying lookout for the suspicious behaviors on the ramps. They will have to be more responsibilities must to be searchable for lookout any suspicious activities. Security will be more tightening measures to inspected the catering truck to made sure no one ever allowed to bring illegal drugs through the gate. This is inappropriate for behaviors at SYD. They are already went to jails without bails or bond. It will be spent rest for the life sentences. It would be too impossible for trying to bring cocaine during the flight out LAX-SYD on UA. DEA will have more investigate for against those 3 mans gotten drug busted.

This story was already posted here in NewsStand. The link mentioned that the first big bust happened in December 2007 aboard a United flight. IIRC that might be the case where the drug mule disposed of the drugs onboard and they were discovered before the crims could get to it.

Interesing update - the alleged conspirators are 'Bra Boys', a notorious gang at Maroubra.

The Australian: Caterers ran drugs through security holes
AFP spokesman Steve Grant yesterday confirmed the airport's security framework had made it easy for the most recent group of smugglers. "It's a very clever operation that has been easily perpetrated within the security framework," Mr Grant said. "Purely because of their willingness to engage in a criminal activity."

He said the nature of the operation involved someone taking the drugs, "on to the plane, into the cabin and (secreting) them within the cabin at a location known to the catering people". It is believed that if this person was a passenger on the flight, further arrests may ensue. The investigation began in 2007 as a result of Australian Customs and Border Protection intelligence assessments and saw up to 12 AFP officers working full-time and intercepting more than 58,000 telephone calls.
Plenty more here.

Its awful for bad guys to keep off the streets for good. They are got big busted to bring illegal drugs into the entire countries. Federal police has already found out for which one of those criminals got being caught the acts. I am not appreciate it for behaviors who work for caterers. When the package were deliveries to him. I think DEA or CBP will have more investigate for against the 3 caterers workers are on drugs charges. It will be spent rest for his miserable life in prisons forever. AFP didn't find any more evidence for against the man who took the cocaine onboard UA flight out LAX-SYD. The security didn't searches inside the catering truck. They have to be more stepped it up security measures have to be checking to made sure no one ever allowed to bring the drugs. LAPD need to be inspected the vehicle before entrance into the secure areas. K-9 dogs will be patrol around the perimeter. Security need to have more tighten at the commercial airports.

Why smuggle it from the US to Australia? I might be wrong but I'm guessing it's more difficult to get it into the US in the first place than it would be to fly it on some South America-Australia flight. Maybe the security is tighter on flights arriving from S.A...

I don't understand why smugglers don't just use small UAVs or AUVs(autonomous underwater vehicles). There are some obstacles to overcome but it's harder to get caught red handed, at least. I'm sure they're paying big enough bucks for transportation that it would be worth the investment. They probably just think it's harder than it is.. thank goodness criminals are generally uneducated!

In all the coverage of the arrests here in Oz, I haven't seen any report of who was involved at the US end or how they got it onto the planes in the first place.

Looks like the background checks on airport employees might not work as well as some would claim. If they can get drugs onto a UA flight, what else can they get on?

Yes, the security will have more stricter due to too many smuggles the drugs into the entire countries. They will have to be requirement with fingerprinted screening. If they will found out who have the criminal background check. They will be automatically to be terminated from their jobs. This is real problems lot of illegal drugs entry into SYD, BNE, CNS, MEL, PER. The Customs & Border Protection will have more increase the x-ray machines search before entry into the customs areas. It have need to stoppable to bring illegal cocaine, and etc. Security need to stepped it up patrol around the preimeter. K-9 dogs will have to be inspected the aircraft & cargo hold after the flight is arrivals into SYD. Security need to taking own responsibilities have to be searches the drugs & weapons.
