Americans being kidnapped in the Philippines?

I've been hearing a lot of stories over the past few years about American tourists being kidnapped in the Philippines.

I was thinking about going there this winter, but I'm not sure if this should be a big deterrent from going.

Where in the Philippines are you planning on going? It is a big country, the vast majority of which is incredibly safe. I was there last week and had a blast. Plus, I wasn't kidnapped.

Hmmm, from the research I've done so far I'd like to check out Manila, Boracay Island, Puerto Princessa, and Cebu. Have you been to any of those places on your trip? Do you have any other recommendations?

Just got back from visiting Cebu/Bohol with no problems.

Most of the kidnappings have been in Mindanao..

...so you have nothing to worry about. When are you going?
Boracay has has an increasing green algae problem which occurs earlier and earlier each year. Last time we were there it had already started in Feb. Its not dangerous but if you wanted that perfect beach experience your photos may not look so great.
Go without fear you will be fine.
