I fly out of IND and *almost* signed up for clear last year. The lines at IND were terrible. However, I wanted to wait and see what the new IND terminal had to offer before getting scanned, probed and charged. Glad I waited. It's now actually faster to bypass the Clear lane and go straight to the TSA. (well, prior to yesterday)

I purchased a two year renewal a few weeks ago. Just filed a dispute with Diners Club. We'll see what happens.

As for the program, I'll happily pay $120 a year to a private entity that will in turn pay the TSA and airports to open special expedited lines.

According to the agent he talked to, he was her fifth caller today disputing the charge.

Just got off the phone with VISA who submitted my request for 10 months back. She said if the bank/merchant never responds the refund will remain on the account. Who knows what the bank of Clear will say? Guess we will find out.

I never understood the business model. Having a few passengers pre-checked doesn't improve security - not if 99% of passengers aren't checked. So what's the point of doing the background checks? They should skip the added security, and associated costs, altogether. The TSA together with the airlines should simply charge a higher fee to go to the front of the security lines. I understand the business model if it's just selling perks!

The promise (never lived up to) was that in exchange for up front screening there would be less screening at the airport. Shoes stay on, laptops stay in bag, etc. TSA never approved those procedures after introducing the whole registered traveler program to begin with.

As I saw in another sites thread:

1. Create a mismanaged "security theatre"
2. Promise a way to skip it and not deliver
3. Profit!

Granted I enjoyed Clear, but always wished they could have delivered on the whole shoes, laptop, etc thing.

And don't bother with one of those "Checkpoint Friendly" laptop bags that open up. I was still forced to remove my laptop twice and was lucky enough to be able to return the bag.

The way in which they shutdown was a little too "Massingil Country Flower" for me.

and i join the two of you. no offense meant to folks who paid for clear but it is/was a waste of money and afaic, i wouldn't trust the folks storing my personal data as far as i could throw them.

To me, the personal information side of this is the big story (albeit getting suckered out of a couple hundred bucks stinks, too). Iris scans? Fingerprints? That's some serious stuff, no? Your opinion is noted, but it is exactly that ... and my opinion is that it was well worth the $159 I paid. That said, I might have paid the $199 the next year, but I'm darn glad I didn't pay for multiple years.

My biggest question is what can they do with the fingerprints and iris scans? The SSN's, etc, I'm not as worried about since I have credit monitoring (and some call that a waste too), but a digital fingerprint or iris scan to my knowledge can't be used to obtain a credit card fraudulently (yet). I know the conspiracy theorists and such will give me many reasons why, but they'd probably suggest a tin-foil hat too. I did a quick google and can't seem to find anything that tells me why I shouldn't give it out. The government already has my data (NEXUS) and I think I distrust the US government more than a private company like VIP. That being said, I hope they do make public the destruction of such data.
