SF Hotel Workers Stage A 3-Day Walkout

SAN FRANCISCO -- Nearly two weeks after their union overwhelming approved a strike, dozens of San Francisco hotel workers walked off the job Thursday, staging a three-day work stoppage -- the latest labor action in a lingering contract dispute.

Aurolyn Rush, who is a telephone operator at the Grand Hyatt and on the negotiating team, told KTVU that the three-day work action was being undertaken to put pressure on the hotels at the bargaining table.

“The bosses are trying to take away our healthcare that we have worked years and years to maintain,” Rush said.

The walkout – including some 50 picketers at the Hyatt -- targeted just a handful of hotel in San Francisco.

Starwood workers in Chicago also recently voted to strike over healthcare. The article notes that Hyatt (a target of the SF strike) implemented a similar plan which would make about half of all current covered employees ineligible for health benefits.
