NYC Hotel for Thanksgiving 2009

I am travelling from Seattle to NYC over the Thanksgiving Holiday this year.

I am looking for reasonable hotel room rates. at a nice hotel. I checked the FAF rate for the Fairmont and it is a little out of my league.

I would rather spend any extra money on touring the city and visiting the sites.

Thanks...

Patrick

What is your definition of "reasonable"? Hilton properties are running under $300/night for that weekend. You probably won't get much better than that for Thanksgiving for a brand name in Manhattan, it's a huge tourist weekend because of the parade and the start of the shopping season.

You want to come here during one of the most popular and expensive times of the year. Reasonable? Not sure what your definition is but I don't know of a hotel in Manhattan that is reasonable at Thanksgiving. Who knows, maybe for you $500/night is reasonable.

Seeing the sights and visiting the city costs NOTHING compared with your hotel rate. So saying that you want to focus your funds on sightseeing really won't go far at Thanksgiving. Just trying to show you how this city is not cheap especially at Thanksgiving which is the beginning of the holiday season.

Please let us know what your price range is.

(My understanding of the Fairmont NFAF rate is that it cannot be booked more than 90 days in advance, so it is impossible to know whether there will be any rooms available at that rate over Thanksgiving at the Plaza.)

Check www.betterbidding.com and www.biddingfortravel.com

People report their winning hotel bids. It will give you an idea of what people are paying.

Also, try www.hotwire.com When you plug in your dates, you'll get an idea what rooms are going for. You can always use this as a base.

Welcome to Flyertalk patrickhunterg.
FYI, the NY attitude coming across is considered a welcoming gesture by some. Better get used to it.

Standard advice I always recommend for busy times like that.

Reserve something now, even if you have to cancel it later. As more and more people book rates will go higher and higher.

Not really sure where you have been looking, two minutes on the Hilton website shows rates as low as $135 a night for the Hampton Inn in Chelsea, $239 at the Waldrof, on Starwood the four points Chelsea is like $160, etc (all plus taxes and the rest)

There are some very good deals right now for Thanksgiving in Manhattan.

Come on. Surely you've heard the line, "Yankee home games, only $5,000 for a family of four."

Granted, the season is over by then, but there are other pricey things to do. Consider the ever-increasing price of caviar.

Well, if that family of 4 were sitting in the empty front rows inside the moat, that family of 4 would be spending over $10,000.

One can buy that ever-increasing price of caviar in places outside of New York. I assumed that the OP wanted to focus on NYC-related travel.

In the event you don't want to do hotels, I had a friend stay at the L hostel in Harlem- not the best location, but totally safe, just a bit of a hassle to get downtown where they spent most of their time. The hostel was so clean and nice- and super affordable.

I know there's a hostel downtown in Chelsea (I think?) that I've heard is wonderful, but it was booked up when my friends gave it a shot.
