How far is Port Authority Bus Terminal from Penn Station?

My nephew will be coming into JFK and needs to get to Philly. I understand the fastest/most economical way is via Air Train to Jamaica then onto the LIRR to Penn Station. He has a real tight conection and does not have a train ticket so I am concerned that he may miss his train. In that case, he'll need to take a cab to the Port Authority terminal. Any idea how much cab fare will be between Penn Station and Port Authority. Thank you!

Greetings again, gr8aunt!

Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) is less than 1/2 mile from Penn Station. A taxi should only be about $5-6, tip included, depending on traffic and time of day. Unless your nephew has large or voluminous baggage, however, he is probably better off taking an uptown A, C, or E 8th Avenue subway one stop from 34th Street/Penn Station to 42nd Street/PABT. There is an entrance into the PABT from the subway.

Better yet, why doesn't he just wait in Penn Station for the next southbound Amtrak train? They tend to run pretty frequently.

If you must go to Port Authority bus stop from NYC Penn station, my
advise would be to board towards the front of the LIRR train from Jamaica..
at Penn Station get out towards 8th avenue. Catch a cab or walk on
the 8th avenue. Its about 8-10 minutes walk.

Besides Amtrak from Penn station, Bolt bus is also an option.

One more thought: If your nephew is looking for the most economical way to get from Penn Station to Philadelphia, he can also consider Megabus. Their bus departures to Philadelphia leave from just outside Penn Station, and the fares are quite low. However, tickets need to be purchased online at www.megabus.com, and are non-refundable. But the cost savings might make the non-refundability worth the risk.

By the way: how soon is he flying into JFK, and what time is his flight scheduled to land? That will enable us NYC locals to better predict when he is likely to get to Penn Station.

Thanks for your quick responses today! If his final stop were in Philly then yes, staying at the station would be logical but if he misses the 6:30 train to Philly (which would get him home at 10pm) he won't get to his final stop till after midnight thanks to a very long layover. I will tell him about the option to take a subway but if he has luggage, the cab might be easier.

Boy, I learn something new from Flyertalk everytime I post! Thanks, CPX and guv, for informing me of Bolt Bus and the Megabus. I may someday need that info. As for my nephew, he needs to get to Central PA and that ain't easy. He's coming into JFK around 4:15 pm. Needs to clear customs and get his baggage and he has no tickets for the Air Tran or LIRR or Amtrack. He is not familiar w/JFK, AirTran or NYC...so you can see why I don't think he'll make his 6:30 train to Philly, right? But, ever the optimist, I'll keep my fingers crossed that he does. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

You may also buy the tickets online:

lirr: https://www.lirrticket.com/webticket...Welcome?id=002
AirTrain: there are vending machines at the Jamaica station.. a metro card
would work just fine. I think one way cost is $5. You pay at the
destination.
