Any one of NY's "free" museums will take them at coat check. I've done this plenty of times in other cities all over the US. Never had a problem. Only issue is, you have to a) come back before the joint closes and b) leave from the other side of the museum so that the person who helped you doesn't see you leave as well!

This facility does not actually exist. I questioned it when you posted it in the other thread and I confirmed it in the couple times I've passed through that terminal this month.

Do you have any extra TSA search notices, you can pop one of those in for when you return the bags

I have used the facility at JFK, Terminal 8 (AA), lower level.
I was charged $18/day for a set of golf clubs.

I don't know if it's worth mentioning about how much time it takes to drop off luggage at different facilities. I got the impression that at JFK T8, it normally takes 10 minutes, but if you are half-hysterical and in a hurry, it can be done in five minutes.

In the case of JFK (no idea how similiar/different other locations would be), I I had to show a driver's license and credit card (not sure if they swiped it for an auth -- I paid cash at pick up), they photocopied the driver's license (and perhaps the card), I had to fill out a form, etc. Each of these steps is a bit They usually fill out a form on a computer, print it out, and then you sign it. Each of these steps is a bit slow. Having arrived at JFK 25 minutes before my flight with a set of golf clubs, I repeatedly asked that they do it in the fastest possible way, and they whipped out a paper form that we filled in.

I managed to get them into storage and make my flight.

I don't recommend the following as a good option for storing your luggage but I'm mentioning this as an anecdote.

Once after a stay at a hostel (this was 10 years ago when I didn't care as much for things such as egyptian sheets and in-room breakfast) in New York I had a scheduled pick-up by Supershuttle to EWR at the Marriot Marquis in Times Square. I simply stepped inside the hotel entrance with my bags asked the elevator attendant to punch me up to the lobby/hotel reception (on the 10th floor or something). I got out of the elevator and headed for the busy reception area. I approached some baggage handlers by their trolleys directly, told them I was already checked out and would like to store my bags until my pick-up arrived. I had a five dollar bill out before he could get my name down on the luggage tag.

No questions asked. Smooth sailing. There wasn't even a fee back then.

I don't understand why you don't recommend this option. I think one can walk into virtually any hotel and ask to have luggage stored.

Frankly because I'm not to sure how keen hotels are on handling non-staying peoples luggage.

In some hotels, like the Waldrof, the baggage storage is open and available to everybody. Most hotels don't care if you are a guest or not, some have posted signs for storage rates.

Does anyone have any suggestions of large hotels not so far from Chelsea where one could plausibly leave bags?

In McCarran airport (LasVegas) they have lockers for storing (reasonable size) luggage. These are all after security. Convenient for a several hour layover. If LAS can do this, why can't JFK, LGA?

Anyone have any suggestions for an option near Citi Field??

It looks like I'll be going to a game shortly after arrival home into LGA and heading back to my apartment first to drop a bag will be quite annoying. Best I can think of is the Sheraton in Flushing but I'm hoping for a better idea.

I think that your options are to either check the bag on your inbound flight, and just not claim it until after the game (not sure what the airline's liability is if you wait five hours to claim the bag and it's missing), or try leaving it at any of a number of hotels, including the Sheraton in Flushing, or the Marriott or LaGuardia Plaza on Ditmars. You can easily get to the stadium from any of those places with the Q48 or a taxi; and you can also use the #7 to travel between the Sheraton and the stadium.

The Sheraton denied me.

So did the Comfort Inn around the corner.

The HoJo down the block from them, after a bit of begging, offered to hold it for $5 that I'm quite certain the front desk guy pocketed.

In short, don't do it because you are likely to fail.
