Wow. That is brutal.

Sadly, the place will probably do well, as it clearly is not targetted toward the crowd who read NYT restaurant reviews.

what does Fieri deserve?

From what I've seen of his show, he seems to be urging the sheep-diners to actually go somewhere other than Denny's or Applebee's (a good thing in my book).

The author of the article acknowledges this when they ask the question:
Quote:
Is that why the kind of cooking you celebrate on television is treated with so little respect at Guy’s American Kitchen & Bar?
Is Fieri a dbag for the way he looks & sometimes acts? & for his meh products? (I've tried a few of the sausages, so-so at best, & the sunglasses on the neck look) I say yes, he looks & sometimes acts like a DB.

But other than his DB looks/actions, I applaude the way he pokes into the independent dining scene on Diners, drive-ins & Dives.

SW: Fair enough question. My comment was aimed at the situation he set up by way overstretching and opening a gigormous restaurant, in NYC of all places, and then if we believe the reviewer staffing it with undertrained staff and horrific food. The guy is somewhat fun to watch on TV although already past his "sell by date", and I do give him credit for featuring the types of places we should frequent, but from all reports a great chef he ain't.

And yet his reviews on some sites like Open Table are mostly favorable (which will have way more influence on the tourists that visit the restaurant than a NY Times review most of them will never see)

Eclectic menu - fun bar.. a must when in NYC

I would come back for the calamari

The food was good, as was the service

This place is definitely worth a visit.

Overall I had a great experience.

The food was great.

Some of the food is outstanding

Food was delicious(spins on classic comfort food), and great beer on tap (Red white and Blonde was awesome).

We werr pleasantly suprise at the wonderful service and tasty food! A great experience overall.

Fun, fun, fun!! Food was comfort food prepared up a step!! Service was great!

The best restaurant I have been to so far!! Everything was awesome, food, service, great atmosphere!!

Funny. And not surprised. Never trust the authenticity of someone who insists on pronouncing his last name in the faux-italiano manner with that slight roll in the R, but pronounces his first name all gringo-like.

Well written horrible review. I can't imagine going to a restaurant which seats 500 people That sounds more like a Carnival Cruise.

I heard about the NYT review and am glad that I go to read it for myself. My first question would be- What did Guy Fieri ever do to Pete Wells? It seems like Pete hates Guy!
I did hear that the restaurant did suck but I am picturing it as a massive Fridays. Not a place that I'd choose to eat but I wonder if it is really this bad! From what I recall reading somewhere, the restaurant is more Guy's in name than vision/ food. I am pretty sure it is run by a big company and just has Guy's name on it.

Another point- Who really eats in Times Square... Tourists. It will probably suit the tourist crowd well.

Another review, maybe even worse:

The Crispy Crimes of Guy Fieri

Quote:
Mr. Fieri not only serves truly horrible-tasting food, an awkward origami of clashing aleatory flavors, but he serves this punishing food emulsified with a bombastic recasting of deep-fried American myth. Mr. Fieri’s most egregious transgression isn’t what he puts into his fellow citizens’ stomachs, it’s how the cynical slop interfaces with what he puts into their minds.

New York Times Worst Restaurant Review Ever Published

Sometimes a Times restaurant critic will try and make his or her mark by doing something memorable such as when one made Masa the first non-French restaurant to get four stars. But Pete Wells has written what to me is the most scathing review of a New York food establishment I have ever read.

In

As Not Seen on TV
Restaurant Review: Guy’s American Kitchen & Bar in Times Square

he so eviscerates Guy Fieri's establishment that it recalls the lambasting Mimi Sheraton once gave to Régine's when she even carved up the coat check room.

Guy's is rated no stars and "Poor."

This is a representative paragraph. You really have to read the whole thing.

Hey, did you try that blue drink, the one that glows like nuclear waste? The watermelon margarita? Any idea why it tastes like some combination of radiator fluid and formaldehyde?

The NYT was a bit late to this as UPROXX had a review up from the September opening.

Plus, he had partnered with Sedexo to license his name and "food" to college dining areas. The Freshman 15 has just doubled.

I thought it was hysterical. Did you notice that every single sentence is a question, except for the last one?
