Exclamation Hurricane Sandy - Emergency Measures and Travel Impacts (Oct 2012)

Well who would have thought about a late October hurricane/tropical storm impacting NYC. I thought we should have a thread as far as how Sandy will impact New York in regards to airport closings, mass transit and area commuter rails, and the like.

Seems strange as hurricanes feed on warm water but the local water temperature is what in the low 60s.

East Coast "Superstorm" and Possible MTA Shutdown

Eyeing the possibility that Hurricane Sandy will continue on its path toward the New York City metropolitan area, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today directed the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to begin planning for an orderly suspension of all subway, bus and commuter railroad service...

A final decision on whether to suspend service will be made by Sunday...

...If a decision to suspend service is made by Sunday, New York City subways and buses would begin an orderly suspension of service at 7 p.m. Sunday. Metro-North Railroad and the Long Island Rail Road would suspend service at 7 p.m. Sunday. Some lines may be curtailed over a period of several hours before all service is suspended, but no one would be able to rely on any MTA service after 7 p.m. Sunday.

all transportation will shutdown at 39mph winds -- the low end we are expecting is in the 60s and 70s, so expect transportation shutdowns to begin the 28th at around 7pm.

also, public schools are currently being converted in to temporary shelters, of course more information will be available the 28th during the press conference.

Megabus is halting all service between DC/Balt/PHL/NYC after 5PM Sunday and all day Monday. I'm on the 1230PM bus back to NYC and just got to Union Station. Surprisingly, things are quite and calm at Union Station but I have not been upstairs to the bus staging areas. Hopefully those with plans to go to NYC will stay home. But Megabus tends to be full of young people that are implusive and have little fear. Megabus boardings are often a zoo even in normal times.

Getting around Manhattan tomorrow will probably be near impossible. I'm hoping my gym will be open, I get the feeling I will be going stir crazy if not.

I live right along the line in the West Village. There is a link you can put in your address and borough but when you hit "FIND" nothing happens. Way to go NYC.gov. In either event, I'm staying put as I'm on the 5th floor.

Traffic along the NJ Turnpike is extremely light. I hoping the food stores are still stocked when I get home around 4PM. No food in my apartment.

I remember how much longer the MTA shut down than was necessary for Irene... Lazy schmucks...

newyorkgeorge and I both had trouble with the NYC.gov address search. Try this site: http://project.wnyc.org/news-maps/hu...ane-zones.html

The website has been overwhelmed. What you described happened several times to me since yesterday as I have been looking up the addresses of relatives, friends and businesses.

Good luck!

Just go to the map directly, skipping the address lookup:

Your first sentence is exactly why this is such a threat. So many things have come together to make this storm work and in the right quantities.
*Mid strength TC riding the warm current up the eastern sea board
*Late in the year so it is not falling apart before tapping into cold mid latitude air aloft, otherwise the shear will just rip it apart
*An injection of rotational energy at the right time from a wintertime system

Looking through model data I am stunned at the agreement and the skill at which the development of this system has been simulated. Please heed all warnings, this is a dangerous situation The free parameter is exactly when the storm surge will occur in NYC, at high tide you could see a 11 foot storm surge..

It was working earlier. I'm guessing the load killed it. You can get the same data here: http://project.wnyc.org/news-maps/hu...ane-zones.html.

I hope it worked for you. Things were looking pretty bare when I went out for a couple last-minute things.
