Hmm, an interesting distinction I suppose. Last time I was there I didn't look for an entrance from the hotel itself. Is there not one? Do you have to go outside of the hotel to enter the restaurant?
I suppose the accurate word would be adjacent to the hotel?

There are entrances to the restaurants on Boylston Street, and there are entrances to the restaurants from inside the hotel. I don't even know if you'd call them "adjacent to the hotel" - I would indeed call the Frette store "adjacent to the hotel" because there's no door from the Frette store into the hotel building. I don't know what I'd call the restaurants.

Umm...they're in the hotel building but not run by Mandarin Oriental. How's that?
My favorite local restaurants (keep in mind they're not necessarily higher-end): Solea in Waltham, Christopher's in Porter Square, Cambridge, and for faster food, Upper Crust, with many options.

I'm not sure why you're so obsessed with this. Some corporation, probably not the Mandarin Oriental, owns the hotel. The Mandarin Oriental runs the hotel under a management contract. L'Espalier and Sel de la Terre rent space in the same building to operate their restaurants, just as Frette leases space to operate its retail store. It really is not all that complicated. And of course from a hotel guest's/restaurant diner's perspective, it's probably irrelevant.

Sorry, I'm into semantics. And I keep forgetting to put in "wink" faces.

Bottom line-MO runs the hotel and its own restaurants (Asana, Spa Cafe, M bar, ect.). Those restaurants are designed by the hotel and incorporated into the hotel.
L'Espalier and it's sister restaurant just leases the space from the building's owner. It was designed and is run/managed by Tony and his investors. I'm sure that L'Espalier have some type of relationship with MO (in terms of maybe holding x amount of reservations for the hotel's guests and residents, ect.), but that would be the extent of it.
I still haven't made it to L'Espalier's new home yet...
I used to go ~once a month when they were in the brownstone over on Gloucester. Always felt very "homey" there...the new glistening decor at the MO has scared me off for now. :\
