Bus to NYC... from Boston 'burbs?

Gang,

Do any of you know if any of the bus services offer service from any of the southern/western burbs of Boston to New York City? We live in Medway, which is south-west-west of the city... and hate to drive all the way into the city if we do not have to... any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

William

You can catch a bus to NYC from Framingham. Details at greyhound.com.

I actually grew up in Franklin

I'd recc either the bus leaving from Framingham or one of the 7x daily buses leaving from d-town Providence.

What I usually did was drive to Chappaqua NY (2 1/2 hrs from Medway) and catch the commuter rail (1 hour ride) into NYC from there. Free parking in Chappaqua last time I was there..

You can also catch Amtrak west of the city -- a spur runs north from CT stopping in Hartford and Springfield -- it's a drive west for you, but usually cheaper than the train on the Boston Amtrak line, if it's green you're looking to save taking the bus instead of the train....

... and the train wins 'hands down' over the bus every time! With no traffic to contest ... I've done it a couple of times.

I have been stuck in traffic on the rails on many occasions. Amtrak shares the tracks with commuter and freight trains.

You can get a Bonzanza bus (owned by Peter Pan) from Foxboro too. It is a more expensive than leaving from Framingham but might be less hassle for you. http://www.peterpanbus.com/tickets/fares.php

If you like to gamble, you might also consider driving to Foxwoods and leaving from there. There is plenty of bus service from Foxwoods to New York City: Greyhound to Manhattan, and several so-called Asian line-run buses to Manhattan (Chinatown), Flushing, Forest Hills, and, I think, Brooklyn, as well. Although the line-run buses usually sell their tickets as roundtrips from NYC to Foxwoods, I have been able to ride them one way (space available only) from Foxwoods to New York for the roundtrip fare, which was around $12.00 the last time I rode! And if you ride them from NYC to Foxwoods, your fare gets you a free buffet and four $10 matchplay coupons.

Plus, parking at Foxwoods is free.

I know there's one from Fitchburg, vans actually, see them every morning, but that's probably too far for you to go. No clue why people want to go from Fitchburg to New York every day, but they do.

If interested, I posted this last year in a thread from Worcester to NY. I know absolutly nothing about these vans, other then if they are in a rest area and I want to stop, I go to the next one (5 minutes away) because there won't be a line.

It's Fitchburg, Worcester to New York. 508-799-4902

Thanks for all the advice....

We are going to the FT Brooklyn Reality Tour in June and was looking for the cheapest way to get to NYC... I should have said that up front.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

William

Call me a snob - but the bus stinks.

Drive to Stamford, CT. Park in the garage for $10/day. Get on the Metro-North train approx. $19 RT. The train will take you right into Grand Central Terminal. Poof - you're in NY. Total travel time = 3:15. Total time on a bus = 4:30+

Ok... SNOB....

It takes us 2:55 to reach Stamford.... and then add in the hour for the train... it is getting to the bus times... much higher cost.

To each their own....

Another alternative to going to Framingham is catching the bus in Newton at the Riverside T stop which is right off 128. It maybe a closer drive to Medway than Framingham.

New to the area, eh?

That said, although it certainly is no closer, Riverside Station does have plentiful (and I believe cheap) long-term parking. I have no idea what the parking situation is like in Framingham or elsewhere.

Parking at Framingham (where the regular buses stop, not LimoLiner) is reasonably plentiful but not cheap -- it's about $11/day. It's intended mostly for people who are taking the Logan Express buses to BOS, which go from the same place, but is available equally to regular bus customers.

LimoLiner calls at the park and ride opposite the Sheraton, at the opposite end of town, and parking is free there. (Then again, you're paying more for the bus!)

With all that said, I'd personally drive most of the way until I could pick up a reasonably fast, frequent and cheap train (or boat) into Manhattan. I've parked at New Haven (big garage, not too expensive, train not bad either), I've driven all the way in (take the Hutch to the Cross-County to the Saw Mill to the Henry Hudson -- I drove from Marlborough to the Upper West Side in three and a half hours that way, including a Starbucks stop!), but the best way ever was finding a hotel on the Jersey City waterfront with free parking for guests. (Plus, you're not far out of the way, it's a lot cheaper than staying in Manhattan, and the views across the Hudson are magnificent.)
