Flying to MIA in October for an anniversary trip with the Mrs. Don't get down to MIA very often. We really want an SUV for the ride down to the Keys. If we book the EA Midsize deal, and let's say when we arrive there are no SUV's in the EA, can we request one, or would they have to adjust our reservation for an SUV, and then pay that rate, rather than the midsize rate?

Are you a regular EA member or executive? If you are an executive your chance of getting a premium SUV at ES lot is very good. Regular EA lot is a hit or miss for SUVs, sometimes they might put a compact SUV in there.

Regular EA member. We'd be ok with a small SUV, but bigger is always nice. Whats interesting is if I were to reserve a SUV, my corporate rate is the same for either small (Ford Escape) or Intermediate (Jeep Grand Cherokee). That rate though is about $200 more than the Midsize/EA rate which is why I may just book that and take my chances.

We will arrive on a Tuesday around Noon in early October. Is it likely that if there is nothing in EA that we like, could we request something like a Grand Cherokee and still get it for the same rate?

I typically consider MIA as a tourist location due to those cruises and families go on spring and summer vacations, so your chance of getting a SUV at that time is fairly good since Oct is not a peak tourist season. Sometimes they have large business conference meetings there so that might hurt your chances but overall it looks good. For $200 I would definitely take my chance and reserve mid-size and hope for a SUV on the lot. They might not let you take a Grand Cherokee with midsize EA reservation but it doesn't hurt to ask and you might get lucky. MIA and LAS are two of my top favorite locations for upgrades, I typically can walk out with something nice there.

Thanks for the help Nightracer. I havent been travelling as much in the last few years so i'm a little "off my game" when it comes to these things. I think we'll just see what we can get when we arrive. Thanks again for your help!

this location always has SUV more than ever because of the gas prices your chance of getting an SUV is big they been putting minivans and crossover SUV in the EA aisle.

Arrived late last night. The transfer from the terminal to the RC was infuriating, and just illustrates how Miami continues to flirt with banana republic incompetence. Where the damn signs pointing to the train??

Once there, the EA had very few cars - a couple convertibles, one malibu.

The EE had one 300, one G37, a few convertibles, 3 Avalons, one Edge Limited and one Grand Cherokee Limited.

There was a MKZ, but it was over at the premium area.

I went for the 300 - but someone spilled something like glue on the front pax seat. The manager tried to remove it, but was not successful and took the car out of service. He was very apologetic...unlike FLL where the response would have probably been "do you want the car or not??"

Next I went for the G37, but the satellite radio was already out and the car had multiple drops of white paint on its black body - not very pretty...and the interior was fairly ratty.

Next I went for one of the Avalons...but still half asleep and not thinking, I ended up leaving the Avalon to take the Ford Edge Limited, thinking the mileage would't be so bad. Dumb move.

The car is nice, but either the gas tank was not filled properly or the car drinks like a fish - the tank was under full before I even hit 95.

On the bright side, the checkout agent told me the manager comp'd me a half-tank of gas for the 300 problem - which was a very nice and much appreciated gesture! I will keep the Edge for abit and see how it goes, but once the tank hits 1/2, I might drive to PBI and swap it for something else.

I had an Edge last weekend as well and I was quite surprised at the mileage. I had a regular FWD Limited and while the computer showed 21.2 MPG that was not reflected at the fuel pump. That was surprising because every other Ford I've rented (new Taurus/Flex/Explorer) all were spot-on accurate in terms of the fuel levels. Took 15 gallons to fill up from 1/3 tank...I think I was the recipient of a "I'll fill up 60 miles from the airport and hope it's still full when I get there! car.

Does the MIA National have any Jeep Wrangler's in stock? I ended up booking Emerald Reserve - Standard SUV. Would love to drive a Wrangler down to the Keys. I know they are probably all hard-topped if they have any, but it would still be fun for me.

One thing I noticed about MIA - the taxes/fees are *much* higher than FLL, which itself is much higher than PBI...something to consider if you're renting for multiple days or frequently.

Had the same experience with the Edge. After topping off the tank, the trip computer reported 25 mpg at my next fill up. Instead, I only averaged 20 mpg of economical highway and suburban driving. Definitely disappointing since I find most trip computers quite accurate.

The car only had about 1000 miles when I picked it up so that might be a factor.

Anyone have any MIA reports lately? I'll be in on 10/9 and want to see what my choices could be in the SUV department. Anyone know if they have any Jeep Wranglers in stock there??
