This is uninteresting. You'll find these aren't variations in policy by National across locations - they reflect different taxing authorities at the airports: state, city, county, airport authority, stadium funding, common rental area, etc.

The first incident I can recall was a misc daily charge at ORD. Your outrage is coming nearly three decades late.

If you checked National LGA and Avis LGA you would likely find significant equivalence.

As such, this isn't a National problem, it's OMNI. There's a forum for that.

In many instances you can save substantial money by flying into your destination, taking an Uber to your lodging and then picking up a car from a local car rental location.

I've posted this as a reference, not a rant against national. While it may be uninteresting to you, the difference in rental costs because of fees between STL and MCI equaled the total cost of my flight. Knowing this information would have saved me $300 by flying into St. Louis instead.

Very true, although for a short-term rental, the cab fare (or Uber if you have them) can eat up the cost difference, especially if you have to return off-airport to avoid a one-way charge.

I'm actually very interested in this thread. While it's true that car rental fees began about 3 decades ago, it is appalling that they keep growing. The latest, and most egregious, of these fees, is the customer facility charge. What the hell? Shouldn't the cost of the facility be a cost of doing business and be included in the price? And since you only use the facility when you pick up and then return the vehicle, why are you charged for each day of the rental? I'm astonished they can get away with it. I used to rent cars all the time at PHL, my local airport, since it was always where the best deals were, but since the advent of the customer facility fee ($8/day at PHL) I've not rented even once. Obviously they don't care. I wonder how much more the public will take.

I hope "they" means government. CFC is essentially a tax imposed by Philadelphia. It is a pass thru to local government at the same rate across all rental car companies using rental facility at PHL. Please write to your PA state senator.

Fantastic information. It is a shame the public in the areas with the high taxes/user fees don't realize how it can discourage travel to their area. Travel planners for large events do look at these costs when selecting a city for large events. Kansas City was one of those cities where it was shocking how high the taxes were, the taxes and fees were almost the same price as the base rental of the car. When you see the base rate on rental cars in Kansas City and look at the cab fare prices for the long trip from the airport to town you think the rental car is a bargain until you return it and see the extra fees and taxes.

I'm guessing a lot of the cities with the higher taxes and fees are areas where the local government is trying to increase taxes in a way that the average voter doesn't see, or is affected. The worst is when there is a tax that is added and then you pay a sales tax on the additional tax or fee. Nothing like an additional tax on a fee charged by a taxing authority.

Remember too you are paying these taxes and fees on your free days also, but at least when the fee is a percentage of the cost of the item you pay nothing. It's not the car rental company's fault, it is the city, county and airport of the area who all want a piece of the action of what you pay on your rental car.
