If you have a DL SkyMiles AMEX, sign up for the double miles thru the end of the year promo, then buy a ticket. Check the DL board for the thread.

Also, having the DL SkyMiles AMEX and earning even one mile on that every 18 months will keep your account happily active and unexpired.

Dining program extends expiration

Also signing one credit card with the skymiles dining program and dining out once every 18 months keeps your miles alive. I have done this for many years and kept my108K miles alive as they have always been very hard to redeem. However, just recently, they came in handy for an emergency trip from Boston to Bangor Maine for a 25K miles but with a hefty $155 last minute fee.

I have 62000 general Delta SkyMiles and can book a return ticket from SEA to DCA (economy class) for 40k miles. Is 40k miles a worthwhile use for such a distance or should I keep accumulating miles for an international trip or get an upgrade to business? Tickets are about $550 which I'd rather not spend but can.
Price out a ticket into BWI. It could be as low as $200++. And no, I don't think that it's worth 40K miles. Can you book the F award for 45K miles.
