20,000 American Airlines miles for a Citibank checking account

Earn up to 20,000 American Airlines miles for opening a Citibank checking account and do some stuff with it:
  1. Open and fund an eligible Citibank regular checking account with $1,000 or more by January 31, 2009.
  2. Within 30 days of opening your account, make at least one direct deposit into your account or make at least two electronic bill payments from your account each month for three consecutive months and earn your first 10,000 American Airlines AAdvantageŽ bonus miles.
  3. Continue making a direct deposit into your account or making two electronic bill payments from your account each month for the next nine consecutive months and earn an additional 10,000 American Airlines AAdvantageŽ bonus miles.
The Apply Now link on the offer page takes you to an application for a "Regular Checking Account". Clicking on the link for Package Deals and Fees takes you to a list of checking account, none of which are labeled "Regular Checking Account". All of the accounts have minimums or minimum activity required to avoid fees. The Citibank Access Account with direct deposit looks like it might be a very good deal, if it qualifies for the miles. I would call the number on the offer several times to see if I could get consistent offers about which type of account qualifies for this offer.

I leave it to you to read all of the offer and its details, terms and conditions. Take great care that you open the right type of account and that you know the fees associated with it.

Are you sure this isn't a targeted offer? I received one of these from Citi Cards in November and it clearly stated that the offer was targeted.

It was targeted, because one of our card received that offer, and another card was 10K miles but only needed the first 3 months activity.

However Citi's targeted offers seem always have an offer code which in the past can be shared.

I dont find any "regular" checking account either back in Nov when the offer came.

I see nothing in the offer terms and conditions that say it is targeted. This might help:

"To apply by phone, call 1-800-374-9500
and mention code CYBD"

And "This offer is available to CitiŽ / AAdvantageŽ cardmembers who are the primary credit card account holders. Offer is not valid for existing Citibank checking customers". Opps. This may mean Citi AAdvantage credit card members. Ask.

Similar promos in previous years required that you have a Citi AAdvantage credit card, not yet have a Citi checking account, and that once you established your Citi checking account you "linked" your Ciit AAdvantage credit card to it (which simply meant that you were able to see that credit card when logged into your checking account, as well as the normal way).

Another thing to remember is whether you have had a Citi checking acct in the past. They view you as ineligible for these promos if you have had a checking acct within the last few years. Also Citi is rather notorious for being unreliable in fulfilling their end of these bargains.

Your mileage may vary.

are there any other promotions right now that offer miles for opening a checking account (any airline program is fine)?

Just signed up for this promo. I'll keep an eye on the mileage bonus posting.

There are lots of them. See the Banks section of the Finance page of my website below.

If an Citi/American Airlines credit card is first required, there is still plenty of time to get one, then open this account. The credit card should get you another 25,000 miles. See the Annual Fee Cards page of the Credit Cards section of my website below (though the annual fee for this one is waived for the first year.)

Has anyone tried funding the account with a credit or debit card? Is there any fee if you use a credit card?

You can make your initial deposit from another account – just have a blank check handy. Or use your credit or debit card.

Strange, I opened up an account and got to the funding page, where I printed off the Credit Card authorization form.
Apparently, I was supposed to get some sort of an application # to reference my account when faxing in (or calling in) the CC authorization, but never got that.
For those of you who opened this account, did you get some sort of a confirmation e-mail? If so, how soon after opening it online did you get it?

Where are you suppose to give Citibank your Advantage number? I got through the whole application, have an account number, and was never asked for my Advantage number.
