At any rate, at $200 per week (up to $1000 a month), this is losing value in a hurry. I might try to fight to get my Cash Advance back up (as the 60K 'funding' debt I had is now gone) if I knew what the April 2nd date really meant. But, it really sounds like they'll be plugging that hole once and for all. So, I don't think I even want to waste my time (and perhaps a credit pull) just to restore the CA level.

It does not necessarily mean $200 per week. U can do the next transaction as soon as your cash advance becomes available again. For example, I did $500 on my business SPG on Tuesday, and by today I already had $500 available again, so I could've gone and purchased $500 more. If it weren't for April 2nd, I would've waited 30 days after today until I purchased my next $500.
$200 at a time per card would be a hassle for me, I wouldn't bother. Even $500 is at the bordeline. It takes me about 15 miles just to get to the Amex Travel Center. But I feel like I have to take these last few opportunities.
Got $1000 TC's on each of my three cards last week spread over two days. All three came up with 'request denied' at first and the CSR overrode that after being on the phone with her for 10-15 minutes each time. Thanks to dgordon, it has been a good run since June '07 starting with weekly runs to the AETC and ending with monthly runs. With this door closing, will have to wait for another to open so that my international travel can be financed with free or relatively cheap points.
I had the same experience today (should check this thread before I go to an Amex office ).
But, IMHO, this is not really a sign of the times. Amex has had problems for years making money in the San Fernando Valley office. The just closed one was opened after another in Encino was closed.
Guess this is the end for my TC purchases. Darn it.
At least I should get my 15K Starwood bonus points with the help of earlier TC buys.
It's over early for me...went to the AmEx office and was denied. The teller called customer service and after 30 minutes of CSR trying for figure out why I was denied TC purchases (even with $12k available balance, and $3k available cash) she finally told me that I don't have enough tenure with the card (that I got last November). She explained the they are tightening up cash and TC's at AmEx.
It was a good run and I appreciate the FT'ers that helped me get a few extra points via the TC game, thanks!
It's interesting that you were told that you didn't have enough 'tenure' with the card. I just received my SPG AMEX card today & promptly went to the AMEX travel office & was able to charge $1K of tc -- no problem at all (and just in the nick of time!). It may be that I've been an AMEX customer since 2001, & have an AMEX Plat.
I know people are referencing 4/2 as the day when TCs will stop posting as points. Is that including 4/2? (ie, until end of day tomorrow?)
The printed 'Supplement to Cardmember Agreement' specifically said:
"Effective April 2, 2009...' -- so I interpret that to mean today is the last day the TC would be considered an 'eligible purchase'. Hope you were able to make it before the end of the day.
Does anyone know if the fee-free AMEX gift cards fall under the same category as TC now?
Looking forward to hearing from those who went today and onwards and have their statements closing in about a weeks time.
should be no problem getting them, the only problem is not getting any miles or pts, but is great while it lasted
I stopped getting the TCs with my reg Amex Gold , as of 12/08 the purchases didnt earn any pts as it till till then. So just as I was able to get the TCs in DEc and Jan but earned nothing for it. Im sure TCs will still be able to be had just nothing for getting them
I understand that purchases of travelers checks MAY not earn pts/miles anymore, but will the amount still count towards spending qualifications? I need $40,000 to reach Hilton diamond. I am not so much worried about the points I am just hoping it counts towards the 40k.

Brilliant. Like somebody at Hilton or AMEX needs to know about this. It seems to me that the publicity generated from this Flyer Talk Travel Check loophole gave the AMEX management all the ammo they neededto cut this off.
Now we
open up another front for them to close.

Dont worry too much about this - think about how long the TC was being discussed openly on FT and Fat Wallet.
You must appreciate what a tiny minority we churners/ point accumulators are compared to the overall credit card holding population.
Card companies know about these loopholes - I suppose it's just a case of how much tolerance they have.
I have personally learned alot from these type of forums and try to also contribute. If everything were kept "secret" then what would be the point of these forums??
