Just got $1000 travelers cheques from a AETC at the Beverly Center location, via my SPG AE card.
This is the first time, and I was asked for Driver's License only.
However, The center told me that only $1000 travelers cheques is allowed per 30 days, regardless of what the cash advance limit on your AE card is.
Is this right? Or they are just messing with me? Isn't it $1000 per week?
Anyone know about this? Thanks in advance.
Recently did change to $1000 every 30 days, PER CARD. So if you have multiple AMEX cards (genuine and not issued by others like Citi), then you can buy more at one time.
As hyped on TV commercials, I decided to try and deposit my TCs into a Chase ATM machine. It gave me some options (if I wanted a picture of my deposits, a line item for each check, or just a sum - or something of that nature).
Anyways, I chose the second option and it told me to insert the checks, up to 30 at a time
I had 5 TCs that I inserted into the receiving slot. After waiting several long seconds, it rejected my first check. It repeated this process for each check, taking several seconds each, before it rejected them one by one. I was at a drive-through ATM so it was not fun holding up other cars behind me
I ended up having to drive up to a normal teller window and explain what just happened and proceeded to deposit my checks. To make things worse, the teller miscounted a $500 check for a $5 check so I wasn't happy about the whole thing, but that is besides the point.
Conclusion - Chase ATMs cannot accept Traveler Checks - you have been warned
I would recommend using the old-fashioned stuff-them-in-an-envelope method if you are thinking of using an ATM for your TC deposits.
Like many long threads, this one has posters asking the same questions over and over and over again.
Hint: Read the first few pages of the thread and many or most of these questions are answered.
Dont worry, if Amex holds to its guns this thread will be history come early April when Amex is suppose to stop granting Pts or Miles for TC purchases. Just as it has for MR pts a couple of months ago
I popped in to the AMEX travel center off Michican Ave in Chicago yesterday and two minutes later walked out with two $500 TC's charged to my SPG Amex card. Receipt showed $1,000 purchase. Will watch and see how it posts to my account. Process was painless and easy.

Deal Done?
I have been buying TC's from AMEX for a solid 6 months now, been following the thread and the changes... Just last week I tried to buy some TC's at an authorized AETC & was declined...
Customer Service Claims that you can no longer buy TC's with a credit card & that you can only buy them with a Charge Card...? Anyone else experience this?
Until I see several other confirmed cases of the above, I'm going to assume that the particular cust. ser. rep I talked with on the phone didn't know what the heck she was talking about... As have been proven time and time again, 3 calls to AMEX cust. ser. often gets 3 different answers...

Well, if the deal is done, then you're the first to report on it.
Perhaps the rep was thinking about Black Thursday (Nov 6th, 2008)?
Ever since they allowed the 30 day rule, I've never had an effortless purchase. Last time one of my cards worked without a problem, but, for the second one it was denied. Had to waste 20 minutes on the phone with the CSR's before a supervisor put a 'pre-approval' on the other card so it would go through.
At any rate, I'll be going at the end of this week, and will report on my experience.

This is what they told me in december but my wife was able to get them 10 days ago. I was hoping to do it one more time before it is over.

I got $2.6K on Feb 20 with no problem.
The key for me is, having accepted (for the moment) Amex's refusal to give me more than $600 in cash advance limit on one of my Starwood cards to just get that much on that card and get 1K each on the other qualified cards (which were issed before the Bush crunch).
I do wonder what will happen when I go in in March?

I think we're having different issues though. At the end of the day I am not being denied in part or full, I still get to make my full purchase. I just get an initial denial on one of my cards (not the other) and have to call. When I call, all CSR's and Supervisors say that I should be allowed to make the purchase -- thus ultimately the supervisor getting me a pre-authorization code. Thing is, none can actually figure out why the charge is being denied in the first place without the pre-authorization. Again, only happens on one card. Other card is effortless.
(before anyone asks, both have identical credit and cash limits)

keep in mind that Feb only had 28 days so if you got the last TCs on say 2/4 then 3/5 will be less then 30 days! If you do go just to see and it was less then 30 days and you are rejected you will have to go back again next week to be sure you wereent rejected due to less then 30 days
Just got my Hilton HHonors statement showing a $1K TC purchase last month and a term change notice buried at the end of the bill which apparently means the end of my trips to Amex to get TCs.
Eligible Purchase Exclusions
"Effective April 2, 2009 we are amending the agreement regarding the accumulation of reward points (or miles) appended to your Agreement by adding the following to the end of the sentence defining Eligible Purchases:
“or the purchase of American Express Travelers Cheques and American Express Gift Cheques or other cash equivalents.”
Kinda sad.
But, I am confident FTers will spot a new opportunity soon.
Meanwhile, looks like there is one more Amex run in my future.

Not to worry, I do know how to count 30 days
It will be 30 calendar days for me at the end of the week.
At any rate, as said, I've never been rejected. Just have to speak to CSRs once and a while to manually force the approval.
