What is the amount above which you need to provide a SSN?
I was asked for my SSN for only a $1500 purchase. I put $1000 on my Hilton and $500 on my Costco card. This was done at the Dallas location just yesterday.
$5K every 30 days. But troublesome "due to recent economic conditions" as cited by the AMEX credit dept.
I didn't get any MR points for the TC purchase (Platinum charge card) and there was similar report about the not getting MR points for the purchase with Gold charge card.
Received my Hilton credit card statement today - points posted for the TC purchases.
However, they point out some new T+C effective Apr 2 2009:
Add to T+C EXCLUSIONS for earning points: purchases of Travellers Cheques and Gift Cheques.
Will need to see if next SPG statement makes any reference to same new Exclusions as on Hilton statement.
Only time will tell ofcourse, but could be the end of the road for this.
I received the same notice, and as noted by others, this text already existed in the terms and conditions. Perhaps no change is really happening at all, or perhaps they're trying to say 'we really mean it this time'.
At any rate, I'll keep buying the travelers cheques until they fail to earn points. I won't bother making the monthly trip just to help get gold status. Besides, for those who don't stay at Hilton (or Starwood for that matter) enough to earn the gold status the regular way, I hardly see how much benefit there will be from getting it via the AMEX spending thresholds. Especially considering that for some of us it takes these 'pre-approvals' to buy travelers cheques now since Black Thrusday in November, and that extra time spent could be anywhere from 5 additional minutes to 30 minutes.
Take the worst case (30 minutes) and multiply that by 12, and you've got 6 hours extra time spent each year, you've earned no points, and you're still $8K shy of spending needed for HHonors Gold ($18K for SPG gold).
How valuable are those HHonors points to now put your regular spending on instead of using your 'regular spending card' ?
Ultimately others may have varying opinions on how valuable HHonors and SPG gold status are ... but, you won't see me going to buy TC's without at least earning the points (and we don't even know if this spending will count anyway towards the status spending anyway).
I purchased $2,000 (two cards) recently in downtown NYC and they also asked for my SS # for the first time. I noticed that they had a sign up stating that they require SS #'s for purchases over $1,000. I hadn't noticed that before.

From my experience, Amex asks for SS numbers for secondary cards as well, so even if you're using a secondary card they have the SS#. It's possible that it has to do with the card type and/or account and that they don't always ask for SS# for secondary cards. YMMV.

I also have a secondary card for TC purposes and Amex does NOT know my SS# in regards to that acct. When we asked for it we simply said we dont know it.
I just got a 2nd card for a friend on my acct, I cashed in for a stay for him and he will use the card coming in till he charges enough to give me back the pts I used for him. At no time was I asked for his SS#
Do you earn 1% cash back if you use the Costco trueearnings amex? Is the limit $1,000 per card per month? If I have a SPG Bus and Personel Amex can I buy using both? How many cards can you use at once? Is the limit $3,000? I have 4 I could use.
