My Delta Skymiles card was rejected today as I tried to buy $1000 in traveler's checks. The very friendly people at Macy's, New York Amex office mentioned that many cards were declined, but that they didn't know why. They put me on the phone with customer service, and I eventually reached someone who was able to tell me why: Under a rule change a couple of days ago, the skymiles cards can no longer get the traveler's checks.
The end of an era?
Yes.... the end of an Era. I tried last month and my card was rejected, however the lady called AmEx and they took the card. Great I thought, but then when I get my bill yesterday, I found a Cash Advance fee and no skymiles. They processed it as an emergency cash payment. My calls to AmEx supervisor produced no results and he stated Skymiles card were no longer getting free TC's. Thankfully I did it on the 28th so there was only a $4.50 fee and since I pay in full each month, no more fees will be charged.
1) You have other purchases on your statement (duh).
2) You got some bonus points from some kind of promotion (the promotion may be from a few months back (e.g. pay utilities with HHonors CC and get 5,000 bonus points)) (or it may be one you are not aware of).
3) Bank error in you favor, collect 4,500 HH points (in that last case, don't be surprised if the points find their way back to wherever they came from at some point in the future)
Interesting. According to some of these posts, the memo came out on Nov. 6. I saw it and decided to try my luck the next day anyway. Went to the Walnut Creek CA location. Was told that I could only get $1k once every 30 days but she didn't say anything about how SPG cards no longer eligible. Took my SPG card without comment and processed the charge. It went through and today saw the charge on my online activity at amex .com -- looks like a regular charge and not a cash advance.
Wondering if the memo is just an advisory memo or if the computer systems are now programmed not to accept any card other than charge -- if the latter, makes me wonder how my sales went through.

My hunch is the computer is still letting them go through. Thus the agents refusing to even attempt to run my card -- I asked, they said they'd get in trouble if they even tried.
Likely the computer will be updated soon.
If your location still lets you run the card, keep enjoying this while it lasts.

Anyone tried the Tyson's Center (Tyson's II) location in Northern VA?
I'm a newbie and just opened an Amex SPG Business CC> I received it yesterday and on the paperwork and on the back of the card it is listed as "OPEN". I haven't activated it yet but am HOPING this will qualify for the online TC's? Has anyone tried it with this business AMEX (SPG) ?

Both online and and Travel office TC deals or dead. Your OPEN SPG Business card will be denied for any TC transaction.
I guess I'll call Amex and try to get the fee waived on my SPG card this year. I can't justify the fee anymore on a card I use only at Costco.
Just FYI: Have you looked into Costco True Earnings Amex Card?
https://www143.americanexpress.com/c...RDS/161/0/0/-1 It is free with your paid Costco membership and gives you 3% cashback on dining, 2% on travel and 1% on everything else. Plus Personal card gives you also 3% cashback on gas and business card 5% on gas.
