Welcome to Flyertalk.
Nobody here will be able to answer your questions without much much more information. Some of the information that should be taken into account is:
1) Where do you live?
2) What airlines do you normally fly?
3) Do you stay at hotels often? What chains?
4) Do you spend hundreds a month and carry a balance or tens of thousands a month and pay it off every month?
With this information in hand you will be able to start to look through the specific forums for the airline of your choice, hotel chain of your choice, and the credit cards to see if there is some program out there that matches your needs.

Every dollar spent = 1 Starwood point.
20,000 starwood points converts to 25000 miles in most airline programs; effectively giving you 1.25 miles for every dollar spent.
Freee the first year, and $30 per year after that.
Many of us would say that Starpoints are much more valuable than airline miles.

Northwest and US Bank
I don't know about other banks and their check cards. But we use worlperks Check card though US bank. Its like 1 per 2 dollars spent. But we use our check card for just about everything so it seems to build up miles really fast.
I am sure other banks have the same thing - without having to actually sign up for a credit card.
