Lots of articles refer to big liabilities for FFPs, ie too many miles to redeem. How do i find out what the liability is for the major programmes (do they even report them)?

Also, what is a good average value of an airmile?
Some help would be appreciated.
Any airline listed on a stock exchange will provide that data in their SEC 10-k forms which are available on line. Just Google it.
As to per mile value. anything higher than 2.5 cents would be incredibly optimistic IMO. Using miles is more an art form than an economic proposition these days.

Since the above question references Gulf Air, I've split it out into its own thread in the Other Middle East forum: How to collect my miles on Gulf Air

Hello everyone, I'm new to the site in the last few minutes. Since my last credit card, which included miles, was a victim of the banking collapse (so long, Wamu) I have been looking for a new credit card which will reward me for my purchases. I was 99% through the Delta Sky Miles application when the fine print stated that the cost of a card was $450 a year! I can't justify spending the cost of a domestic flight each year just to have a card. Certainly there is a better deal out there... any ideas? sugestions?
Our hotline at FlyersRights has been ringing off the hook with folks who's frequent flyer miles are expiring. Of course there is a great deal of frustration amongst folks who began accumulating miles prior to these new unilateral rules imposed by the airlines which range anywhere from 18 months to 2 years for expiration.
My thought is, if your miles are about to expire and you cannot use them prior to expiration, why not donate to a good cause so they make take advantage of them.
We are working very hard with DOT to try and help folks hang on to their miles, but there isn't much we can do about these new rules and it's a shame to have those hard earned miles go to waste. There are many organizations that would pay for the transfer of the miles, and/or pay the booking fee for use of the miles.
Please consider this and for your own sake keep track of your miles so you don't lose them. Time "flys" when you are having fun right!
Most folks are caught unwaware when they get that notice that their miles have disappeared.

For many (perhaps even most) frequent flyer programs, donating just a minimum number of miles (say, one or two thousand) will reset the expiration date on the remaining miles to a year, or one and a half, or two years in the future (depending on the rules of the particular program). Thus, donating miles is actually a good way to SAVE the remaining miles.
Also, there are MANY, MANY, MANY ways to EARN (as well as spend) miles without flying. Earning or spending miles will (typically) also reset the expiration clock.
It sounds like you were unaware of these things. If you are truly involved in "Flyers' Rights," it would behoove you to educate yourself about the details of program rules, rather than advising people to simply donate all their miles.
Your statement "but there isn't much we can do about these new rules" betrays complete ignorance. There is PLENTY that can be done about mileage expiration.
Can you point me to a place where I can get a list of acronyms?
Hi I hate to sound stupid but I am sometimes lost in the abbreviations and vernacular on FT. Is there a list somewhere that can help me? I am having problems knowing what's going on and I want to be involved. Thanks Marylyn
