Just to test this I wrote a review on the 3rd and the miles posted on the 9th - not too bad.
They never asked me for any proof - only had to check the box saying that I did in fact stay at the hotel.

They spot check. At first more often than later, but yes you will be asked to send evidence from time to time, and all reviews are held up until the evidence they request from a particular one is satisfactory. Logically they don't want you writing reviews from places you haven't been.

I went ahead and did this.
I reviewed 3 hotels I stayed in last month.
Westin South Cost Plaza, Comfort Inn Sunset Blvd, and Kvart Apartments Moscow.
They immediately made me fill out a post survey captcha for the third one, and click a link in email confirming what I said is true. Yesterday they emailed me requesting proof, so I provided it. The two US hotels were accepted without issue.
However, nothing has posted to my AA accoubt yet.
I stay in enough random hotels, and I type fast enough to make this worthwhile, but only if they post the miles.
I will post an update soon enough

Here are the available options for reward miles (and the amount of miles offered). I know it's not great but figured it was worth passing along the information:
Miles and More (100 miles)
Airberlin Topbonus (150 miles)
PINS (150 "pins")
Etihad Guest (150 miles)
American Airliness Advantage (70 miles)

tb=topbonus, airberlin's frequent flyer programme.
Airberlin offers their own credit Card=CC. At the moment and for yet indefinite time you earn 400 miles per review which is the highest amount ever offered.
Same if you receive(d) the (personalized) email offering this, but limited until the end of January in that case.
