Upstate NY to LHR Miles Plan...for September travel

Hi All.....

I am newbie and would like to get some input on my plan.

I am planning to travel from ROC-LHR and FCO-ROC (coming from FCO for less tax) with a companion..

This needs 120K United miles and following is my plan. (from my research it shows united is the best option. Connection + miles considering).

Apply mileage explorer/Chase card get 55K miles (50K +5K auth user)
Apply Chase sapphire and get 40K miles
I already got 20K on my mileage plus.

Does this sounds like a good plan? Appreciate any comments. Ideas....

Thx in advance.

Returning from CIA is a terrible plan, if you want to use UA miles, as no UA partner serves CIA. Try FCO instead.

Get the united points and drive a couple hours to Toronto. There are 4 Air Canada flights every day YYZ to LHR that you can use the united points on as part of star alliance.

well sure but why? I might have more options....but it cost same amount of miles.....so unless there are no available super saver...offers hassle is not worth it.

If you are committed to using UA miles and only personal cards, that's a good plan. You could sub in a UR business card for a 50k bonus if you want. Also, make sure you get the UA offer with the $50 statement credit.

If you are open to using AA miles, you could theoretically book at least half of this at a lower mileage level if it's an off-peak date. ROC-ORD-LHR on AA metal would price at 20k one-way in coach Oct 15 - May 15. (I don't think there's a way to route the return at the discount rate.)

EDIT: US offers an off-peak window of Jan 15 - Feb 28 at 35k miles round trip and could be routed ROC-PHL-LHR // FCO-PHL-ROC. It would be 30k with the US credit card.

The issue in October time could be more towards rainy, colder time in UK, Paris and Italy. This is why I was thinking late Aug or early September.

What is UR bossiness card? Does it better than sapphire? Also how would I get the $50 offer from united/chase offer? I do not see that in the offer. Appreciate the help.

The UR business cards are (primarily) the Ink Bold and Ink Plus. They have different bonus categories than the Sapphire and also have 50k signup offers.

In the last few pages of the UA card thread, people have reported receiving an offer for 50k+5k+$50 if they found they could qualify for the 50k+5k, then instead of applying on that application, went to do a flight booking. It shows up right before you purchase. Someone also posted the direct URL for the offer with $50 attached.

I was thinking to sign up for 2 cards at the same time? Like within the same hour. Specifically either Mileage expo + Sapphire or Mileage expo + ink/bold. Is it safe to do that with chase.....will this make one application to be rejected? or Do I really have to wait sometime before applying for another card with chase....

Most people have the second card rejected but can call for reconsideration, all things being equal.

There is a specific thread in Credit Card Programs about Applying for Chase cards. Lots of info.

I think that your plan is a good one. I would get either the United Explorer or Sapphire Preferred card first, meet the spend requirements on that card, and then apply for the other card, two or three months later. I'm no expert on applying for Chase cards, but I think spacing the applications out will minimize the chances of a rejection, and since you're going to need some time anyway to meet the spend requirement, why take a chance by submitting two applications at the same time?

I would use US Airways Miles instead. United is more difficult with credit cards as they have an exclusive agreement with Chase.

US Airways has the same availability for saver awards as United, you just need to call. 100k in business, round-trip. Open jaws are allowed.

You can do a USAirways personal card, USAirways biz card plus the starwood personal and biz and have more than enough miles. Different banks, different credit agencies, makes it easier to apply for more cards.

The USAirways card also gives you a 5k reduction in US Airways only awards. Their J seat on their A330s (which they fly to both LHR and FCO) is one of the best seats out there. Cathay Pacific uses a modified version of the same seat. American's new J seat is based off the same one as well.

Mileage requirement on AA is the same for the return leg provided that it's also in the off-peak window. AA awards also offer free stopover at the North American gateway (both directions), this may be another factor to consider.

I just checked US airways website and created a round trip ticket only from ROC-LHR it cost 92K miles per person non business. I am not sure how you came up with the numbers. Could you please clarify further?
