Keeping mouth shut when someone else is talking about miles/point

I was out dinner tonight and at the next table seated a few young man and women.

As they were discussing financing a new car purchase, one of them started explaining to the rest of the group about how to get good credit scores and how responsible use of credit cards can yield good rewards, etc things that all of us here on FT will agree

But then he started talking how he use reward points...

I have to try quite hard to keep myself from turning to the side and explain to the group that there are better use of MR points than redeeming an iPod Touch

Grrrrr...

People who buy merchandise on points are what make the rewards systems profitable.

People who take out 0% teaser credit card offers and then can't pay them back are what make those offers profitable.

People who buy lottery tickets help pay for schools and hospitals.

Don't disparage these people; they make life better for you and me.

Umm not sure what your getting at. My point is buying merchandise with miles & point makes no sense of course, But the lottery ref has nothing to do with miles/points. Not that I will win, but I seen it happen personally so even though chances slim it's POSSIBLE.

You have to understand that a good portion of the US population does not like to or cannot afford to travel.

In fairness, I can't 'afford' to travel either without CC signups, deals, etc, and I didn't really start traveling until I got into the game. I imagine there's a sizable contingent of people in the same situation.

Yes, you see this on other forums about credit cards. Posters are often only interested in what they can cash the points out for in giftcards. Travel is not on their list of things to do. They look at credit card bonuses as a way to supplement their income.

Yeah, my sister is a speech pathologist who makes a GREAT income and she has no interest in travel. I don't think she's had a vacation in years but she could afford it. No one in my family but me really likes to travel. Go figure!

Heh. I was at the Fall Festival at a farm a few months back and the two guys in front of me were paying for their food. The one pulls out his Citi HHonors card and notes to the other how he gets several free nights a year by using his card. The other then pulls out the big gun . . . the CapOne Venture card . . . and explains in no uncertain terms how this is the best travel card there is because he can buy any flight or hotel room with points at a discount.

I was sad that I could only choose between my Sapphire Preferred, one of my Starwood cards, or work on the spend on my 9th signup bonus of the year. Perhaps someday I too will live the dream as these two were living it.

My dream is to someday not have to carry a wallet I can't fold for all the credit, debit, gift cards and frequent flyer cards it holds. We need to petition for thinner cards!

Is the Wallaby card the answer? In trial phases still I think.

I also keep mouth shut about this subject any more. Some friends asked how my wife and I traveled so much, and I started to explain and got nothing but blank stares and indifference. My answer now is just "I fly a lot and earn miles".

World-Wide, I'm only playing on the notion that in all these systems, like rewards points or zero interest credit cards, or lottery tickets, there are people who buy these things and there are people who frown upon the people who buy these things.

I'm just saying I appreciate the people who buy lottery tickets because they also help pay for a system that gives me some benefit. Cheers.

I'm glad y'all don't keep your mouth shut here

As someone who uses the collective knowledge of the people who post on this site, I'm glad y'all don't keep your mouths shut, and are willing to share.

Even though doing so means less overall perks for you, in the long run, right?
