would it be better to get this or the surpass? I was hoping to get the non-surpass version and get solicited for an upgrade (+bonus) for it....
I plan to be staying at a lot of Hiltons for at the least the next 6 months, not sure if the 6pt/$ vs the 9pt/$ would be substantial. Average week would be $1000 of hotel expenses.
6000 vs 9000 points a week
= 156k vs 234k points (respectively over a 26 week period).
The surpass seems to be a better bet (esp with the 1 year of free gold status, even though I could get that in month and a half).
What are your thoughts?

Note that in the linked blog post in OP, it is stated in bold letters that the Surpass will earn 12x points at Hilton starting Nov 1.

Could not have come at a better time for me, I was planning to apply for the card sometime later this week or early next week anyway, now the extra bonus will be nice ^.

Will this "regular" Hilton Amex be eligible for AXON awards? I see that the Surpass card is offering a similarly-structured 60k promo (40k after $750 and 20k after $3000), so I'd get the Surpass and forego the 5k points if I could have access to AXON awards. But obviously if I could get AXON awards with this card then I'd take the points (and no annual fee).

Just applied - thought I might not get approved since I also just got the AMEX delta skymiles card but nope, got approved. Waiting for the card now in the mail. No plans to stay at any hilton for the time being, but could come in handy next year.
