Apr 12, 2024For my reservation at the Omni Royal Orleans Hotel this weekend I have a "Run of House" rate. Okay ... that's nice ... What does "Run of House" mean again?

Okay ... so, is that the best room available or worst room available? Is it like a grab bag then ... a room lottery? 
I guess it basically means "We have a room ... we don't know which room, but there should be a room available."

I would assume that that is where being a frequent guest comes in. While they are free to assign you any room--you might have a better chance of a 'good' or upgraded room if you are a member of their club. So if you are not one already, sign up now & present your number at check in. Hey, it couldn't hurt!

Beckles, before you'd get there, I wouldn't be bashful about asking them what "Run of House" means. I worked as a general manager for Marriott in the 80's and I never heard of the term. I'd be safer than sorry.

jeffreyt ~ I'm not too concerned, even the Omni's worst room should be more than adequate for one night and the price is very reasonable given the location and quality of the hotel. I have seen the term used by several other hotels in the reservation systems, so I think it's somewhat of a standard, albeit unofficial maybe.

Jefferyt, I'm surprised you've never heard of this term. "Run Of House" or ROH is probably one of the oldest hotel terms around. It means they can put you in the best to worst room without regard for the rate you paid. It's usually applied to a deep discount rate and simply means when you check-in, they can assign you a great room (usually if the hotel is at low capacity), or give you that special European Single room on the back side ground floor with a view of the dumpster. Hotel's discression.

Opps. I guess it's time to eat crow and does it tast awful. Your right Premex. Thanks for jogging my memory. It's one of those hotel terms like "bucket", "front of line", and "sleeper" that just aren't used like they use to be.

in the swiss travel industry catalogues featuring US and Canada they show two (or 3-5) different room-prices and "run of the house" is the lowest priced room (the other categories would mention some comfort like "seaview", "garden-side", "luxury", etc,).

ranles ~ I don't think any four star/four diamond hotel has rooms that you need to take lysol for. The worst room at a four star/four diamond hotel is still likely to be adequate for a one night stay!

Run of the House or ROH is a common moniker used by wholesale travel packagers to indicate that the hotel property has the discretionary right to assign any available room in its inventory. You have paid for a room...period. What you get can depend on your:
appearance
cologne
demeanor
attitude
credit card
rental car
luggage brand
watch brand
breath/body odour
companion's appearance
salesmanship/aggressiveness
If you've scored well, you'll get the better of the available rooms. I know I always do...I'm sorry, I meant to say my wife always does.

Look at it this way, Beckles, are you planning to stay in your room all day or are you going to see the sites? Run of house means you take what they have, but I've always had good luck calling the hotel a couple of nights before checkin to see if they can get me into a certain type of room. Usually, the hotel staff is more then willing to accomodate the request. Hope this helps.
