Lufthansa Miles & More Card 50K miles, $79 annual fee

I just received a (targeted?) offer from Barclay's for a Lufthansa MC card. $79 annual fee, 20K points after first purchase and an additional 30K after a $2500 spend in 3 months. You also get a free companion ticket for travel departing from the U.S. to Europe/Middle East/Africa and Far East.

Application link - seems open to anyone.

Here is a link to full terms and conditions for the companion ticket as well.

Annual fee of $79. Note that they may also automatically downgrade you to the World MC, which has no annual fee but only offers a bonus of 5000 miles.

Expires May 31, 2011.

If you take advantage of this offer, can you later transfer the miles to Amex or to another Star Alliance partner like United?

500 bonus miles for newsletters

What are the fees for traveling to Europe. The ticket cost 50,000 miles but can't find what else they will charge.

Was Lufthansa part of Epsilon data breach?
I have never seen a promo offer asking for both your account number and PIN in order to register. It looks a bit suspicious.

I too would like to know what the fuel surcharge/taxes/fees are on award flights, especially in Y. I did a quick search of posts on the Lufthansa forum and saw people paying 300-400 Euros in extra fees associated with award flights in J or F. Not sure if it's worth the trouble applying for the card, paying the $79 annual fee, doing the spend, and then paying another $500 USD in taxes.

Also does Lufthansa tack on fuel surcharges to partner flights on UA, TG, OZ, etc?

I'm not too sure, but I think there is no YQ for domestic US itins.

I used some LH miles last year for a R/T ticket from LAX to Orlando (MCO) on UA metal. I paid $5 in taxes.

At least $400 (taxes and fuel surcharge) on LH/LX metal. Don't know about UA or CO.

I'm tempted by this offer. A flight from HNL to SYD with stop in AKL for 40k sounds pretty good!

sure does, but there are a few things that I hate about that offer:
1. US - Canada is 30k
2. You are not guaranteed the bonus. There is a 65% chance you will get only 5000 miles. T&C explicitly state that if your credit is not high enough you will get the lower card and 5000 miles not a mile more.
3. High YQ on TATL and TPAC routes even on partners. Even if you do all UA say IAD-MUC-IAD you are still liable for the same YQ, much like other programs are operating.

In a nutshell I'd jump if I were guaranteed the 50k but it looks it is a crapshoot really....

Can you book it online? If not do the phone reps waive the booking fee?

Wondering if they throw a bone to existing cardholders?
