I thought so too, but the T&C just say "debit card purchases." I think an argument could be made that means either (or at least I hope so!).

I'm assuming that means you have been choosing to enter your PIN when you complete a debit transaction. I would recommend starting to process them as credit purchases since it doesn't cost you any more than processing them as debit purchases and chances are Citi wants to see credit not PIN even though the T&C are ambiguous on this point.

Also, yes, when promos from Citi say use your debit card, they pretty much mean as a swipe. If you do it as a PIN based debit transaction it may not count. I have seen fine print in most every promo I have ever signed up for with them.
Well, since PIN based transactions don't earn anything extra anyway, you might as well do it as a swipe. Tell the store clerk: "CREDIT." It all comes out of the checking acct anyway.

That's what the banker at Citi told me...that the qualifying transactions need to be CC swipes, NOT pin based.

yes and if that debit card gets assigned by you to get miles on purchases then you can do even more. To do this, contact Citi and pay some fee - I think $25 - to allow your card to earn miles on debit purchasing. PIN based will not work with citi, or at least that's been the case as long as I have had my existing citi debit card.

If the transaction has to be a CC one (not PIN), then wouldn't it be better with something like an SPG Amex for the favorable conversion rate?
Just sayin'...
If the merchant insists on debit, the spend won't qualify anyway, in which case I'll come back with my sack of $1 dollar coins and pay that way instead!

Something else I didn't think of, thanks.

I'm not following what you're saying? The reason that someone would use their citibank debit card rather than their SPG in this scenario is because they need to have a minimum number of debit card transaction per month to qualify for the promo... Citibank isn't going to count SPG AMEX transactions towards the minimum number of debit transactions for the account
Well, to make it FEEL better, just go to Costco where one cant use Amex anyway

In LA, we've got parking meters that take cards.
Minimum charge in most: 25 cents.
No way to enter a PIN.
Seems like an easy way to get your five hits for $1.25.

offer everyone parking on a street that you will run your card and they just give you a quarter, and get the points. Then go fight the use of the meter with the town and get back your money in the form of a check. I dunno hahaha

Banker showed me their current promo which is very similar to C22D BUT the bonus is 20K/40K Thank You Points instead of AA miles. He told me that I would be eligible for the second part.
I insisted on miles. Banker was not aware of C22D ( couldn't see it in his systems ) and called support. After reviewing my account ( I already got a couple of AA bonuses this year ) they told me that I was not targeted.
Anyone with different experience ?
Should I give up or try calling customer service ?

Went to the branch today. Asked if I can get the second part of the C22D offer.

just thot of new idea which is almost as sick as dumspter diving for miles coupons on sides of movie theater soda cups...

The possibilities to get this requirement done easily are endless.
