Lufthansa takes over UA.....

.... or at leasts behaves like doing so. A minutes ago I received an Email from Lufthansa (!) in Egypt (newsletter@egypt.lufthansa.com):

Double Up with United Airlines

United Airlines is offering Mileage Plus members a quicker way to reap the benefits of elite status. Customers who book and complete travel by June 15, 2009 will earn double Elite Qualifying Miles, gaining quicker access to the complimentary perks offered to those who have status in United’s Mileage Plus program.
So who wants M&M? Lufthansa urges us to join Mileage Plus....

I'd rather have access to C lounges than have a discounted price to join RCC, which gets you into the C lounges anyway...

Maybe LH has been taking over sales and Marketing of UAL in Egypt, that would be my explanation on this strange thing. On the other hand LH is very much interested in pushing UA as they don`t want them to go under as they need them urgently as US partner even more after the DL/NW merger.

looks like more from a strategic POV, since they are in the same alliance and with threats from DL/NW, they need that to keep UA competitive or they may lose the American market

Not only may LH have taken over UA marketing in Egypt - for some years already LH and UA share all revenue and costs for all UA and LH flights between USA and Germany (and all these flights are bookable as code-shares of these 2 airlines).

Sounds like a plausible explanation.

The revenue sharing on TATL is still in operation between UA and LH.
Beats me why LH would want to do this, but obviously I don't know the contract details and I would assume that LH sees merit in it.

Tried to find the GSA for UAL in Egypt... could it be the same for both LH/UA?
