BKK connection - separate tickets

Hi,
I'm booked in C on VIE-BKK on OS25 in April. Scheduled arrival at BKK is 1420. I would like to continue on to USM (Koh Samui) the same day. My options are:

1.) PG 175, departs 1745
2.) TG 287, departs 1600 (preferred flight)

Will I be able to reach the TG flight with only 1h40 connection?

The PG/TG flight will be on a separate ticket. Do I have to recheck bags or will OS be able to check them through (from HAJ where I will start the trip)?

I haven't been to BKK yet so thanks much for your help,
Kane99

Hi,

OS can check your luggage through to your final destination, even if the legs are not under one PNR or flown with same airline/alliance.

Do not know, whether you have to go through customs in BKK and present your luggage before continuing your travel on a domestic flight...

So you might have no benefit from checked through luggage...

Travelling with different tickets on different PNR can become nasty when one of the flights are delayed or canceled. The airline only has to indemnify you for their flight not for any lost connections under a different ticket.

So I really would think twice doing this.

Whether 160mins are enough for a connection in BKK I do not know...

Okay firstly there is no need to identify your luggage or anything like that at the port of entry. This is not the US. OS can check your luggage through no issues even on different tickets / PNRs.

Secondly, while it can be a bit of a walk through BKK airport depending on where your OS flight will arrive. IMHO a connection is certainly possible with as little as 45min (I have a colleague who did it in 20min but he knew his way around and had his next BP already).

You will have to go to the tranfer desk to get your BP for the USM flight, so I would definitely try to check in online with TG before you depart VIE (its possible 24hrs prior to departure). This way you should be fine. No need to enter Thailand in BKK.

so over all if your OS flight is on time or not more than 1hr delayed you should be fine. Buy a flexible fare from TG though just in case. whether OS interline with PG for your luggage I' m not certain though but think it is the case.

I was in BKK last week (Jan 2) and the airport was very empty. I never made it through immigration in 5min when leaving the country so overall it is not that busy after recent troubles. Good luck

I did this connection in Feb 08. I arrived on TG from ZRH at 06:00 and took the PG to USM at 08:30. Cleared immigration, collected baggage, checked in with PG and was in the PG lounge in domestic departures all within 45 mins.

I would be very surprised if you can do an airside transfer. As far as I know USM does not have immigration or customs. When you arrive at USM you are met by a little tram (just like the ones used at Universal Studios for the backstage tours) which takes you to the open air arrivals / baggage reclaim area.

I have just returned from BKK (SK to CPH on 4 Jan) and can echo the previous poster's comment. Things were very quiet although the flights, both going out before New Year and coming back were sold out.

Hmm, if USM doesn't have any immigration facilities then the otehrs are correct that you will have to clear immigration when entering Thailand. I wasn't aware of that. I usually go on to HKT and there you can clear immigration on arrival. Given it is quiet right now in BKK I think it is possible, but not sure if you are with family and so on. In that case maybe PG willgive you more time over the TG flight.

Also note that TG only has two flights a day to USM, whereas PG has bascially hourly service. TG only started flying this route last year.

The connection to the TG flight is definately doable, if your inbound isn't delayed.
