1 sector in LH C, second sector in LH F a week later - how much baggage?

A quick question for the resident experts:

A friend has a one-way ticket, with a stop-over in FRA in the middle.

The first sector XXX-FRA is in C (with a 30kg baggage allowance), the second sector FRA-YYY will be in F (with 40kg). Time spent in FRA will be one week.

My understanding is that the highest baggage allowance reached during a trip dictates the baggage allowance for the whole trip, so in this case a baggage allowance of 40kg would apply for both sectors, regardless of the stopover.

Can anyone confirm whether my thinking is correct? Does anyone have a link where this policy is outlined (I checked the baggage guide on LH.com, but it does not explicitly mention this case).

Many thanks for any and all replies!

* 30 kg for the business-class segment
* 40 kg for the first-class segment
(with Star Gold status plus 20kg each)

when flying, with the same ticket, different classes without stopover, the airlines usually tolerate / accept (but sometimes only after friendly discussions with check-in agents) the weight rules or the highest segment - I personally insist on that when the feeder segment for my long-haul fist-class flight only offers business (like my regular ZRH-MUC-SFO).

exceptions exist, like
* piece concept for rtw tickets for all flight segments
* sports equipment (golf, ski)

While I don't have a supporting link, my understanding is like yours, i.e. that your baggage allowance is governed by the FAREBASIS.
So the cabin class booked on XXX-FRA doesn't matter and it's not your friend's fault that LH doesn't offer any F on this leg.
...say you're on the waitinglist for F and wonder why in the world it never opens up on an intra-europe flight.

So if it's really a simple F thru-fare XXX to YYY in F with just a stopover in FRA, I think the point is clear and the argument at checkin in XXX is a rather short one that the passenger is allowed to 40k on both legs.

I think to get a definite answer, the link provided by Totti will not completely clarify your issue, so you'd either need a quick confirmation from LH (easy) or try to get access to the IATA ticketing rules yourself (not too much fun).

The thing to do (or rather not to do) would be to buy the official "Ticketing Handbook" from IATA. The trouble is, that at USD117 a copy, it's probably more expensive alone than paying the surcharge, sorry... And I cannot even guarantee it will bring 100% clarity.
The good thing if you buy one is that we could all start asking you all sorts of questions and you'll be the most liked person in the forum quickly.

Let's hope LH answers your question quickly or that someone's got a better idea.

It is in totti's link:

For through journeys where the passenger travels partly on F-Class and partly on C- or YClass service the free baggage allowance on each portion of travel shall be that applicable to the class of service for which the fare is paid.

But that wasn't there before!

...no no, of course you're right and I obviousely just didn't see it. Sorry.

Just proves the point that some people are much better than others in reading (or even worse - - "creating") fine print.

..but thanks to me, you've now saved USD117, so you can have a nice drink with your friend, too!
