award ticket unvoluntary re-route + upgrade to F.. which fare class booked into?

Hi there. I booked a ticket for a friend using BMI miles MAN-FRA-SFO-PHX-SJO in C for this december. Unfortunately the MAN-FRA flight was delayed so my friend missed his connection in FRA and as a result they booked him MAN-FRA-MEX-SJO with the FRA-MEX in F. What I am wanting to know is whther LH would have booked him into O or would it have been a revenue fare class? Interested because he returns tomorrow and I will advise him to join DC if there is the potential for him to earn miles.

Any help answering this question will be gratefully recieved. Thanks.

everything might be possible under circumstances like this. you need to see his boardingpass - whether it is O or F.

Miles or no miles. This appears to be a perfect example of good customer service

Not sure about DC but I know other airlines won't allow you to get credit from flights flown before you sign up for the FF program, but you can sign up on the plane with an FA if I'm not mistaken.

Even if the BP states F this does not mean he will be entitled to F miles.
I am regularly upgraded into F (not O) with UA SWUs, as the agents don't know how to process them correctly. They usually chose the "operational upgrade" button and insert a text "collect voucher".
Miles post as C, however I am met by a PA in BKK as they think I am full fare F.

Regardless of all of this: It is irrelevant as for a retro credit, he will have to submit the ticket receipt. This will state that it was a redemption booking....game over !

Tell him he was lucky to be booked into F in the first place ! Kudos to LH. Other airlines would not have done this !

... And perhaps just as importantly, I've heard of at least one case like this where the person was booked into a revenue seat and earned miles (on UA though).

...but as the OP stated: His friend has not yet joind a FFP thus needing a retro-credit !

I agree that if a FFP number was in the booking he might have earned miles. I doubt it, but possible in theory.

Agreed. If FFP number (of the passenger rather than sponsor of award) is already in the booking then might get miles. For a retrospective credit so unlikely to get miles I wouldn't even bother trying.

UA screws this up now and again, but I don't see getting retro-credit on an award ticket.

Not necessarily with DC. They are "customer friendly". If the boarding pass says F (not O) send them the boarding pass and look what happens. Your friend migh be lucky, he might not be lucky....

You're right. It does seem unlikely though not necessarily impossible. May not be worth it since it sounds like that person doesn't do a lot of flying.
