Very interesting news. LH wants to attract LUX based clients (who could also easily use AF or BA for long-haul overseas flights)
Status miles is nice, but the price for it might be on the number of miles for some booking classes. I am saying might because in my experience all eco booking classes, incl. the very cheapest, would credit at 750 miles, which is not in line with the cached info.
As for l/h-attraction: Luxair serves the hubs of and codeshares on those flights with both LH and AF. In fact, LH holds 13% in Luxair. I seem to remember that it was quite a bit more some years ago. Also, if my memory is right, AF was a shareholder aswell, but that is no longer the case. Neither do I recollect the mileage credit on AF.
Anyway, I flew LG into FRA and CDG a number of times to go on from there. Back then, LG used a gate at Roissy 2D, while it usually was a remote position for the early morning 737 at FRA. Roissy 2 can be so much nicer than FRA
Finance may not be be what it once was. But I can think of some banking places which would like to have the size of LUX. And yes, there are some nice travel budgets.
LH will not get them just for the sake of those status miles on LUX-FRA segments. But LUX is, and probably will remain even after consolidation in the industry, one of the places with notable competition. So it may well be worth every little effort.

And all those LUX-based big shots were desperately waiting for Luxair flights to count for LH status? And that would be the deal-breaker with competition (AF or BA)? Gimme a break...

No, but by piling up award miles and status through the S/H travel on Luxair customers will have an additional incentive to use Miles&More airlines on L/H or to markets that require a transfer.
It is a very simple concept that is one of the key reasons for LHs decentral flying in Germany and their recent acquisitions.
Great move by LH!
I think LUX is a bigger market than many people know.
As for the "bigshots" wanting the status miles- my suggestion is that it is probably more an "annoyance" factor they are taking away from some very good customers by adding the status miles as opposed to customers choosing their airline based on this. From what I understand, there is a pretty good long-haul F market that originates from LUX area- some very interesting companies there.
For me, personally, this is nice as I will pick up a few status miles with this now.
IMO, it's better to wait till M&M makes an official announcement. For me, it actually looks more like an IT-bug (either in the English, or more hopefully, in the German version).
LG doesn't mention anything on it's website about status benefits:
