Free Baggage Allowance
Area of Application
Weight Concept ( WC) applies worldwide, except where piece concept applies.
Piece Concept (PC) applies for fare origin
- to/from USA/US Territories, to/from Canada and via US
- to/From Mexico-Europe (MEX) on LH only
- to/from West Africa (NG, GH, GQ, CM, AO); (LOS/ACC/ABV/SSG/LAD on LH only and
DLA/YAO on LH/LX)
- to/from South America (SAO/BUE/CCS) on LH only
- Star Alliance Round the World Fares
- eff 15FEB09 to/from Ethiopea ET (ADD) on LH only
For transportation where piece concept applies, piece concept free baggage allowance
applies for the entire journey, irrespective a stopover is taken or not.
After a stopover when no piece charges are available, charges must be assessed based on
weight concept per kg.
Example: NYC-FRA-SIN-FRA-NYC for all sectors PC free baggage allowance applies.
If a passenger with PC allowance checks-in baggage after a stopover is made for a route
where weight concept applies, the free baggage allowance will remain PC, but the charge
for excess baggage must be paid according weight concept rates.
Example: Stopover in SIN and FRA; check-in of 2 pc with 40kg (88lb) each. Baggage
allowance is 2x23kg (2x50lb) => 34kg (74lb) have to be charged at the applicable rate per
kg SIN-FRA.

Free Baggage Allowance - Unchecked Baggage

• Maximum dimensions for one piece 55x40x20cm (22x15x8 inches), maximum
weight 8kg (18lb), e.g. brief case, boardcase, travel bag, attache case. The size of
one carry on item shall not exceed the overall dimensions of 115 cm (45 inches)
• or one foldable garment bag (max dimensions 57x54x15cm (22x21x6 inches).
• The standards allowance per compartment is F/C-CL 2 pieces and Y/CL 1 piece of
carry on for international flights.
Exception: Lufthansa Regional Partners on all flights and in all classes only 1 piece

Combined F-, C- or Y-Class Travel
For through journeys where the passenger travels partly on F-Class and partly on C- or YClass
service the free baggage allowance on each portion of travel shall be that applicable
to the class of service for which the fare is paid.
Interlining
In case of interlining when LH is the first transporting carrier and the free baggage allowance
is identical, the applicable LH charges shall be applied for the one-way direction of travel
per checked portion. This inclues interline sectors and as far as baggage has been checked
through according to valid through-check and accounting rules.
In case of interlining and the free baggage allowance is not identical, the applicable LH
excess baggage charges have to be charged also if only required for parts of the journey
and the LH sectors should be collected for the LH portion of the travel according to LH
allowance and regulations. For interlining on ongoing other airline sectors, excess applies
according to the transporting carrier's rules and charges.
When other airlines offer the first leg of the journey, other charges (i.e. IATA standard of
1,5% of Y-oneway) could be applied.
Exceptions for Condor flights:
The LH excess baggage regulations and charges also apply for travel on LT and DE sectors
including sporting equipment.
Exception for sporting equipment on DE:
Condor passengers may book and pay certain sports equipment and also excess baggage
in advance. Such passengers will hold a confirmation and in these cases, only the excess
for the LH sector shall be charged.
Exceptions for Customer Airlines:
For all airlines handled by LH on behalf of the Customer Airline (local check-in), excess
baggage is handled according to the contracted rules.

If free baggage allowances of LH and OAL are the same:
When LH is the first transporting carrier, the new LH excess baggage weight rates shall
be applied throughout the trip to the final destination and baggage will be through-checked
according to the applicable through-check-in rules.
Examples:
Allowance 20kg both carriers (LH and OAL), passenger has 28kg.
• STR-FRA (LH flight) - FRA-TUN (TU flight): excess of 8kg to be collected for whole routing
STR-TUN according to LH flatrates (8kg x €10 = €80).
• DEL-FRA (LH flight) - FRA-LHR (BA flight): excess of 8kg to be collected for whole routing
DEL-LHR according to LH flatrates (8kg x €30 = €240).
If free baggage allowances of LH and OAL are not the same - but the customer's
excess is within the OAL allowance:
Combination of LH feeder flight weight concept and OAL connection piece concept or
combination of LH flight weight allowance and OAL higher weight allowance.
If the allowance on OAL sectors are higher than for LH, but the actual baggage weight is
within the OAL allowance and only exceeding on LH, the weight excess rates for the LH
sectors have to be charged and baggage will be through-checked.
Examples:
Passenger has 28kg
• FRA-LIS (LH weight concept 20kg) LIS-SAO (TP piece concept 2pc x 23kg ea, total 46kg): for
the LH-sector FRA-LIS excess of 8kg to be collected according to LH flatrates (8kg x €10 =
€80); no charge for OAL.
• HAM-FRA (LH weight concept 20kg) and FRA-KUL (MH weight concept 30kg): for the LHsector
HAM-FRA excess of 8kg to be collected according to LH flatrates (8kg x €5 = €40); no
charge for OAL.
If free baggage allowance of LH and OAL are not the same - and the customer's
excess is exceeding the OAL allowance:
Split for LH and OAL sectors; charge of the carriers sectors based on the carrier's allowance
and LH rates to be applied in both cases. Baggage will be through-checked.
In case that customer does not accept the calculation for the OAL-sector, baggage shall not
be through-checked and charge shall only be collected for LH-sector.
Examples:

Passenger has 50kg
• FRA-LIS (LH weight concept 20kg), LIS-SAO (TP piece concept 2pc x 23kg ea, total
46kg):
for the LH-sector FRA-LIS excess of 30kg to be collected according to LH flatrates (30kg x €10 =
€300);
for the TP-sector excess of 4kg to be collected according to LH flatrates (4kg x 30€ = €120). Total
charge €420.
• HAM-FRA (LH weight concept 20kg) and FRA-KUL (MH weight concept 30kg):
for the LH-sector HAM-FRA excess of 30kg to be collected according to LH flatrates (30kg x €5 =
€150);
for the MH-secotr FRA-KUL 20kg to be collected according to LH flatrates (20kg x €30 = €600). Total
charge €750.
In case that customer does not accept the calculation for the OAL-sector, baggage shall not
be through-checked and charge shall only be collected for LH-sector.
Excess Baggage Charges
Collection
All excess baggage must be assessed and charged for prior to the boarding of the aircraft by
the passenger to the next point of stopover:
• in effect on the date of issuance of the excess baggage ticket
• in the direction of travel
• per checked portion: from the point for which the checked baggage allowance is
exceeded to the first point at which the baggage is collected (excluding any transfer
points)
• Through charges are not applicable for split ticketing.

Thanks indeed. Very straightforward rules, the concept is simple in an almost surreal way - any doubts about just about anything are removed in a matter of seconds!!!

Is this a change?

There seems to be a change here.

The RTW: if you do not originate or terminate in USA, PC only applies to those legs otherwise WC.

Don't know if this is a change but I don't remember it from the past.

It also seems absurd that there would be a different baggage allowance on the same ticket.

I thought that if you had sector with PC that should apply to the whole ticket. But what is logic?

Shofar

PS thanks for the posting Oliver - it should be a sticky.

I especially like the smileys - anyone say the Wolf-gang has no humour?

So if one got op-uped:
"For passengers travelling in F and C-compartment: 2 pieces with 32 kg (70lb) each" ... could one ask for the excess back one was charged for overweight in the coach cabin? As only the cabin traveled obviously does count.

Cool rules

Cool. I suspect these rules could be more complicated, but I'll be damned if I know how.

An American flew from Asia to the US via FRA, and was asked by the gate agent to check his bag. He protested for a while, saying the bag was carry-on item on all his flights, including his incoming LH flight, but to no avail. In frustration, he muttered under his breath: "typically German". The gate agent didn't hesitate and replied: "Zis is not typically German. Zeese are ze RULES!".

The rules got updated this week with eff 01APR08 (very apt ) I didn't find any major change. If someone needs the original pdf, PM me. pdf to FT vbb code conversion is not my forte.

Question: I am flying from LHR tomorrow in Y (award) on OS to VIE. Am FTL and *A if it matters.

I have about 40kg checked luggage on 2 pieces.

Am not too sure about the 1 + 1 hand baggage at airport. I carryon plus computer? Cos my computer knapsack alone is rather heavy.

Will try to offload one piece of bag in London at friends' place tonight...

I know LH check-in at LHR are dreadful when it comes to customer service!

OS has its own check in staff and is not using LH! as a FTL you can check in 40kg anyway, no matter how many pieces you have. more info can be found here.

The rules were updated again and are eff 01 SEP 08. This time I used the code vbb function for better readability. Let me know if you need the original pdf by email.

Make sure you weigh your carry-on before leaving home!

I flew DTW-FRA in C the other day, and they asked me to weigh my carry-on bag. Of course it was overweight and I was forced to check it.

This was the first time I had been asked to weigh a carryon. Has anyone else been through this, or is it a new thing for LH, or just crabby service at the always awful DTW?

In MAA they even stand with a handheld device at the lines to security to check the weight what you are trying to carry onboard. If you see what some travellers carry on board you will be grateful for these checks.

Remember that the latch that closes the overhead bin can only take so many KGs of load when you are in turbulence and then the precious overweight luggage you managed to get onboard falls on the head of whoever is sitting in the aisle.

DTW and crabby service? I fly a lot out of DTW on LH and think they are a pretty good station. YMMV, I guess.
