It seems a cheap shot by LH which left a bad taste in the mouth, and as a consequence will think long and hard about using LH again.
Thanks for that feedback. It's unfortunate that LH felt it necessary to charge you, despite the total weight carried being within limits. I would write them a letter telling them how poorly you thought this reflected on them. If they don't know that they're pissing off their customers with this policy, there's no hope of them ever changing it.

Indeed, cheap shot by LH. I just reread the thread, and just wanted to query the following:

Where is such a size requirement stated for weight concept?

LH website only states the following:
Quote:
Especially large and heavy pieces of baggage

If you exceed the free baggage allowance stated above our Excess baggage tariff applies.

When the Piece concept applies (see chart) the maximum overall size (h x w x l) must not be larger 158 cm. We will have to charge excess baggage fees If these dimensions are exceeded.

The weight of the individual piece of baggage may not exceed 45 kg. Different local restrictions may apply.

Question Lufthansa...Baggage Allowance

My wife and I will be taking a flight from USA to Europe (PHL/BUD-AMS/PHL) later in the year and was wondering if anyone might provide insight in to the strictness around baggage allowance?

I am particularly concerned with a piece of luggage I have which seems to be ~63-64 Linear inches...would a gate agent call me on that and insist I pay additional monies?

Also, any buffer on weight?

We will be flying business class the entire route.

Thank you in advance to any/all who answer...

Here is your answer Baggage Allowance. You are allowed two pieces with 32kg each per person. The rules of the international flight also apply on your connecting intra-European flight. The overall size (means sum of height, width and length) should not be larger than 158cm.

In economy class it's 2 bags with a maximum of 23kg each per person. Officially you are allowed 62 linear inches (158cm as pointed out by caspritz78), but I doubt a gate agent will make a big deal out of an additional inch, especially when travelling in premium classes. Last year I flew from MCO to FRA in F with a bag that was way beyond the 158cm (must have been around 170-175cm) without having any problems.

I guess it all depends on the gate agent and how heavily the flight is loaded. If you're flying in Y and turn up with 4 bags that are all right at or even above the limit you might be pushing your luck, but otherwise you should be OK.

The OP is flying in C from/to the US so 2 bags with a maximum of 32kg each should apply.

Yepp, I missed the "We will be flying business class the entire route" part.

Probably I was scanning the post for something like "C class".

I would be surprised if 1-2 inches above the limit would run the OP into any trouble.

What I did not get: How is the BUD - AMS segment done.
Here, it could be, that you are limited to 30 Kg each person, depending how you booked it.

Also, are we talking about hand luggage (here come the gate agent into play) or about normal luggage (this would be the check in agent).

Anyway, how much inches difference are we talking about?

BTW, are you status customer and if, which status do you have?

Maybe, traveling per pedes could result in further luggage weight reduction without any airline restrictions.

Confirming Documentation?

I have a reservation for travel in C class LAX - VCE - BCN - LAX. Is there any supporting documentation on LH's site indicating that the piece concept applies to the intra-European flight (VCE - BCN) booked on the same reservation (see bolded below)? I'd like to be able to show a gate agent if needed.

Much thanks.

The PC concept should be indicated on your ticket in the allowance column. If you need the official rules posted here in LH format as a pdf, just PM me your email ID and you can have it!

Thanks for the quick reply. I am not sure if I will be able to see that or not. I am ticketed through UA on an award ticket, so UA ownes the reservation. About 2 weeks ago I was unable to view my reservation on LH.com, although I can see it on checkmytrip.

Any thoughts on if/where the PC concept would be indicated on tickets issued by a *A carrier? I know UA's allowance is the same for international C class as LH.
