However, I'm afraid I'm still a bit confused....
What is Y?
and What is piece concept?
I looked on my tickets and I don't see Y on them, I see that I am in Economy Basic Light (E) if that has anything to do with it.
Also, if I am able to check them through (AA said it would basically be up to the Agent's mood of the day) - since AA is 50lbs and if they get checked through and the limit is 44lbs, will I have a bill waiting on my when I retrive them if they are over weight? I would prefer not to touch my bags until I arrive in BCN - I guess I don't understand why the 8 hour layover would be a problem in baggage handling, although I don't want them lost so I will gladly do what is required in order to prevent that! LOL
For my return trip there is no layover and I have been told the bags will interline with no problems - so do the same principals apply?
I'm going on a 12 day cruise with pre and post days - so I'm packing for like 17 days and I only want to take one bag so I'm sure it will be close to topped out at 50lbs. LOL
I'm sorry I didn't understand the lingo - piece concept and Y - please explain. Thank you again.
Piece concept means, that you can check in two bags with 23kg (Economy) or 32kg (Business and First). It applies on all flights from/to/within the US, Canada and Mexico. On all other flights the weight concept is your friend, this means you can check in 20kg in Eco, 30kg in Biz and 40kg in First, no matter how many bags you have.
Y = Economy class, C and J = Business Class and F = First Class. These are the booking class codes for fully flex tickets.
We are flying from the US on AA and have scheduled a long (8 hour) layover in Frankfurt before continuing on to Barcelona via Lufthansa.
I've been told that I may not be able to have my bags checked through from AA to Lufthansa simply due to the huge layover. If that is true - are there options available at the airport to store my bags while I sight see in Frankfort?
There is absolutely no problem checking bags through FRA for long layovers (I've done up to about 20 hours). If AA doesn't want to do it that's due to their policies as the airport has one single connected baggage handling system for all carriers.
Thanks for the replies, it was as I expected but felt I needed to ask the question.
Alex0683de - that was the only itinerary I could get for the oubound on the dates I reqd (and it was real struggle with the redemption tool to get that routing), inbound I have CPT>FRA direct.
On the point of my golf clubs, I expect to have only one checked bag, that which contains my clubs plus clothing, and it will weigh less than 23kg, so I anticipate no issues.

So if I am non-M&M *G, fly on a paid C ticket, and only have a golf bag to check, no other checked baggage, they will still charge me?
SmilingBoy's point is exactly mine - So if I am non-M&M *G, fly on a paid C ticket, and only have a golf bag to check, no other checked baggage, they will still charge me?
I'm travelling in C, with an allowance of 30Kgs. Does the simple fact that the checked bag, although within the weight allowance, trigger a charge just because the bag contains golf clubs?
The fact that it is a redemption booking is irrelevant surely?

Or are we over complicating things?
Because it was bugging me, I called LH to ask this question.
The answer is yes, you will be charged extra (70€ each way on FRA-CPT alone) for the golf bag unless you are SEN or HON, or travelling in First, even if it is your only piece of baggage and even if you're far below your weight allowance.
According to the agent I spoke to, this is because most golf bags have dimensions which mean that they must be classified as oversize baggage.
However, if the dimensions of your golf bag meet the requirements for normal baggage (the sum of Length + Width + Height = less than 158 cm), it can be checked free of charge as part of your baggage allowance. Alternatively, you can put your golf equipment into a normal bag or suitcase which meets the size limit, which would also then be carried free of charge as part of your baggage allowance.
Unfortunately, the LH website is down at the moment, but once it's back up I'll hunt around for the page with the regulations to back this up.

Jun 15: BCN - FRA
Jun 16 FRA - LAX - SMF..
As everything is on one ticket, and involves travel to/from North America, the piece concept applies. ie 2pc at about 25kg each. But travel from SMF to LAX *may* be just at 50lb only. That you'd have to check with UA to see what the allowance is for international travel.

Premier is Star Silver, so no extra luggage allowance on LH. For business class piece concept, you can each take two pieces of luggage of up to 32 kg each.
If your flights are not on one ticket, you would only have 30kg total allowance in as many pieces as you want on your intra- European flights on a separate ticket.
