I’m flying Lufthansa home to the US from Dubai, via FRA early Monday morning. I haven’t flown LH to US from DXB and am trying to understand baggage restrictions – is it piece based or weight based? I have Star Alliance Gold Status through US, therefore I believe I can check 3 bags free of charge, max weigh 30 KG. However, from LH website, I’m confused as to whether luggage on LH flights from DXB to US is weight based or piece based. Any info is appreciated, thanks.
BTT: From my understanding, piece concept applies whenever there is a piece concept country involved on that LEG. If you have a stopover in FRA, it might be different. Otherwise you should be able to check 3 pieces with I think 32 kg each.
Cheers

Stopped flying frequently- dropping down to blue soon.
I think the weight concept applies to flights from Dubai:
weight concept by class:
First Class: 40 kg (88lb) - plus 1 ski bag and plus 1 golf bag
on flights operated by Lufthansa and Swiss International Airlines
Business Class: 30 kg (66lb) - plus 1 ski bag on flights operated by Lufthansa and Swiss International Airlines
Economy Class: 20 kg (44lb) - plus 1 ski bag on flights operated by Lufthansa and Swiss International Airlines
+
additional *Gold privilege:
Star Alliance Gold Card Member Weight Concept: plus 20 kg in all classes of travel on flights by Star Alliance partners and one ski bag on flights operated by Lufthansa und Swiss International Airlines.
Piece Concept: plus 1 bag on flights by Star Alliance partners with the maximum weight dependent on the class of travel.
I took that flight on LH so many times that I can help you most: If you are flying on the same day to N.A. without a stop in FRA then the piece concept will apply for your entire trip. Also you can use you Gold status to carry an extra bag or box.
However, if you break your journey in FRA or ZRH for more than 24 hours then DXB-FRA sector will have the weight concept. However, on your N.A. sector the piece concept will apply.
I apologize if I'm aksing this question in the wrong place.
We don't travel much and I'm having trouble interpretting the baggage and weight limits for Lufthansa.
We are flying from the US on AA and have scheduled a long (8 hour) layover in Frankfurt before continuing on to Barcelona via Lufthansa.
I've been told that I may not be able to have my bags checked through from AA to Lufthansa simply due to the huge layover. If that is true - are there options available at the airport to store my bags while I sight see in Frankfort?
Additionally - I understand there is a 50 lb max on bags on AA, but I'm confused as to the weight limit for Lufthansa - is it 44lbs or 50lbs? And is the weight limit for my carryon 18 lbs?
I guess I'm confused in reading the website and not sure if my flight is considered a long-haul or actually an international flight since I had to book the AA flight separate from the Lufthansa in order to build in the deliberate 8 hour layover.
Thank you for any help or insight you can give me - the flight are in April 2009.

The max weight for your bags (if you're in Y) is 44lb (20kg), but two or three lb more shouldn't be a problem.
Your carry-on baggage is limited to 18lb (8kg), but they never checked my bags, so this is also not very much enforced.

For the piece concept it's 50lb (23kg) each in Y.
Carry-ons get checked mostly for size restriction.

You're right, but I don't think the pc applies in this case. The LH flight is on a second ticket and the bags are checked-in only for the FRA-BCN flight.
About the carry-on you're right again, but weight is normaly not checked.

You're right, I didn't see it's a double ticket.
About checking the luggage in, it should be possible to use the quick check-in machines in FRA and drop the luggage there.
However, I'm afraid I'm still a bit confused....
What is Y?
and What is piece concept?
I looked on my tickets and I don't see Y on them, I see that I am in Economy Basic Light (E) if that has anything to do with it.
Also, if I am able to check them through (AA said it would basically be up to the Agent's mood of the day) - since AA is 50lbs and if they get checked through and the limit is 44lbs, will I have a bill waiting on my when I retrive them if they are over weight? I would prefer not to touch my bags until I arrive in BCN - I guess I don't understand why the 8 hour layover would be a problem in baggage handling, although I don't want them lost so I will gladly do what is required in order to prevent that! LOL
For my return trip there is no layover and I have been told the bags will interline with no problems - so do the same principals apply?
I'm going on a 12 day cruise with pre and post days - so I'm packing for like 17 days and I only want to take one bag so I'm sure it will be close to topped out at 50lbs. LOL
I'm sorry I didn't understand the lingo - piece concept and Y - please explain. Thank you again.
