I'm moving to London soon and worrying how to take as much stuff with me as possible. I might have some of it shipped there, but for the first weeks I'd only have what I can take with me on the flight(s). So, is it true that I can check more than one bag as long as the total is not over 40kgs?

If you are FTL on LH its 40 KG plus tolerance (3-5 KG) in any number of pieces allowed.
If you are *G or SEN its your allowance plus 20 KG so it could be 50 KG if you book a business class ticket

The excess baggage rates are quite reasonable too if you compare it to what the movers and airfreight companies charge.

Not all stations are aware of the FTL lugagge benefits - I witnessed YVR staff e.g., which tried to charge a FTL.

The piece-concept applies in YVR so FTL status won't help you here. FTL's only have an advantage on flights with weight concept.

That was before it was changed, it used to be F allowance even for FTLs.

When was that?

I can only recall that they advertised (and still do) it as F allowance but meant that you are allowed to carry 40kg of luggage which is F allowance when it comes to wight concept. And at least since 2002 it as been that way…

F allowance for FTL is still in place for WC (40KG) on the PC system there was never a F allowance. At least in 1999 when I joined and flew a few TATLs.

A trip back in time to 1999: http://web.archive.org/web/199802140...ilesnmore.html

That's indeed possible. I didn't even know that something like M&M exists at that time

**Important New Fee Info**

Hey everybody. This info is now public, and I figure I should mention it here: the excess bag fee structure for LH flights has changed for all Piece Concept LH operated flights. The new structure went into effect today, and is as follows:

Up to 23 kg (M/CL) - included in fare
23 - 32 kg - $150 flat rate
Over 32 kg - Flat rate plus excess charge ($200 to IATA EU, $250 everywhere else)

Extra piece up to 32 kg - $200 to IATA EU, $250 everywhere else.

***These numbers are valid on flights to and from the Eastern USA stations. The numbers may be different for flights located outside of this sector. The full baggage regulations are available on this LH site. ***

The rates have gone up since 1 September. For instance from BOS/JFK/EWR/IAD it used to be $50 flat rate 23-32 kg (now $150), and $105 per additional bag to EU (now $200), and fluctuating rates everywhere else (now $250 flat rate).

Thanks for sharing this information. I merged your thread with the complete baggage regulations to have all information in one thread.

Good so !

I'm just getting sick of the picture alone seeing one person with 4x32 KG bags going to LOS from JFK, showing up last minute in the hope they dont get charged. Thankfully LH got strict on this one and in many cases they cancelled a pax off the flight because they took to long or were too late as stated above.

Same goes for destination BEY & SAH (especially ex DTW) !
