The first one I had said she couldn't as it as a Spanair codeshare and the request had to be made through Spanair.
I called back and got an agent who said she would 'try' and put the request in. Her system responded 'pending' vs confirmed but when I view my booking on ac.com (get the AC locator) the seats are showing.
Same with me - seats show up on AC.com itinerary, but agent says they are pending. The problem is that the seat map on AC.com does not show my seats as occupied. So, I don't think these requests are "taking". Agent says to call Spanair, but they will just tell us to choose seats on check-in as they are not able to view AC's seat maps.

In perhaps a similar situation, whenever I book a *A flight through UA rez (not .com -- actually, I call rez because partner airline seats are impossible on .com) the CSR tells me, "I can only request seats when it's another airline. We can't confirm them." But I've gotten the exact seats I "requested" everytime, provided they were available the moment I called.

Sorry if this leads to overconfidence, but I just want to give at least a little bit of (fact-based) confidence.

Interesting ... I booked my ticket on Orbitz and I was allowed to select my tickets online at time of booking. Plus I was allowed to book bulk head seats which are normally reserved for status fliers. I did have my Aeroplan number on the reservation, but I doubt that Orbitz could tell my status from that. Anyhow, just checked out the seat map on ac.com, and all my selections are "occupied", so guess I'm good to go.

What isn't confirmed however are my seats on the Spanair segments.

We have 3 nights in Mahon and 1 night in Madrid (that dreaded forced overnight.

Looking at Barcelo Pueblo Menorca in Mahon (breakfast, half and full board options available) and the Hilton Madrid Airport hotel (it has a free shuttle).

Nothing booked yet - still too far out!

What's with the overnighter in MAD? Is that on the outbound or the return?

My itinerary is as follows:

YYC-YYZ --------- 13:10-18:55
YYZ-MAD --------- 21:45-11:10 (arrives next day)
MAD-MAH --------- 14:25-15:50

MAH-MAD --------- 9:25-10:50
MAD-YYZ --------- 12:40-15:20
YYZ-YYC --------- 18:00-20:22

So the only overnights are on the plane from YYZ-MAD and in MAH itself. Did you guys get different itineraries?

You needed E availability on that first flight out of MAH in the morning to make a same-day connection to YYZ. If you could only get seats on the other 2-3 MAH-MAD flights, you have to overnight.

<24h stopovers were available in MAD (in each direction) if desired. One could have picked a 12h overnight, or right up to a ~23h almost-full-day.
