When dealing with a sked change, all fare rules pertaining to the original ticket are thrown out. It is the responsibility of the ticketing carrier to get you to your destination, regardless of what fare class is available. Of course, you may be told otherwise, but when you know your rights you can keep pushing. In my experience, the fare class you are (re)booked into has very little restriction.
This is turning into a farce! I called Expedia yesterday about my outbound flight and they were willing to route me through Frankfurt on the same day. I told them I would think about it and get back to them. Just to be sure, I asked if I should speak directly to him, or if anyone would be able to route me through Frankfurt, and he said anyone at Expedia could.
Today, they called to tell me that Spanair did a sked change and that my only option was to go a day earlier or later. Not only that, but they said that they changed my return flight (which they already changed and was dealt with.) CheckMyTrip.com and Spanair still shows the return flights as being valid, so I have no idea why Expedia says that the return flight changed as well.
So, they are looking into it and going to get back to me - the person who called me this morning wasn't willing to route it through Frankfurt... I guess I might try Spanair next.
Had a call today from Expedia about the sked chg. Didn't take the call as I still haven't figured out what I want to do (haven't booked flight to YYC yet!).
Inerestingly enough, they also followed up with an email advice!

Same here, the email said it's their last message as they've tried everything to contact me about this change.

Expedia contacted me about schedule changes
Expedia finally got ahold of me about schedule changes this weekend via phone. I didn't agree with anything as I wasn't too pleased but they said I could call them back or call spanair directly. They are so nice that they are even willing to refund my ticket.
My original schedule was to return 9/28 morning with a 2 hour layover in MAD & a 2 hour layover in YYZ.
Expedia said that they had reached out to Spanair on my behalf and already changed my return to 9/27 11:20 p.m. - 12:45 a.m. to Madrid, long layover, then flying on the noon flight MAD-YYZ-YYC. They said that hotel would be at MY expense if I chose to stay at hotel instead of MAD airport. They said neither Spanair nor Expedia would pay for accomodations. They were also insistent that schedule was my only flight option unless I wanted the same schedule departing 9/28 night.
I checked my reservation on expedia, amadeus, and spanair but it is showing a flight leaving Mahon for Madrid after the MAD flight has left for YYC... (3:15p.m. MAH-MAD flight to catch a noon flight MAD-YYZ) which is what it has been since the schedule change. So in other words, Expedia didn't really change my reservation.
Any suggestion on what to do? I suppose I wouldn't mind taking an earlier flight to MAD, spending the day there, and going on my original schedule (or the earlier flight). Better yet is if I could book Lufthansa and go FRA-SEA-YYC (might forget the last segment). Is that an idea or are folks doing Lufthansa still stuck going through YYZ? Is Spanair in Spain the best people to contact? How about hotel? I am surprised it was offered to some without asking but not even offered to me when I asked. I am curious what Europe's rules are for big changes.
Geez... I paid good money ($96) for this fare... I wouldn't expect such trouble!!!

I would give them a call. Most agents I've dealt with speak excellent English. I managed to get them to give me the afternoon flight MAH-MAD (from the North America #) but I think the Spanish agents are far more flexible. The worst that can happen is that they say no, right? I also managed to get them to drop the MAH-MAD legs after a long discussion since I'm flying with an infant. Good luck with the changes. Never hurts to ask, and if you're reasonable, you can probably get what you want.
I would also suggest calling the Spanish line. I have had to call twice, and both times the Spanish agents were extremely helpful. I was scheduled on the same flight back as you, and I was offered many choices (extending my stay an extra day, or choosing the time I wanted to leave on the 27th). I chose the earliest flight on the 27th so I can spend the afternoon and evening in Madrid. They also offered me a hotel room for the 27th, although they were not able to give me details about it over the phone. I had to change my flight over as well, as I was on the 23rd Toronto-Madrid that was cancelled. They again offered me choices (leaving a day earlier or later), and were able to reroute me through Frankfort when I insisted on leaving the 23rd.
I do have a question for people who were rerouted on Lufthansa. I was booked in W on the Lufthansa leg (and E the Spanair legs). I was trying to figure out if there would be a mileage difference, and I saw that Lufthansa offers 50% of miles in W. Will we be receiving less miles than if we had remained on Air Canada (I am putting miles into my United account). If anybody has figured out mileage for this routing (yyc-fra-mad-mah), could you please share it.

So, I leave next week for Menorca. Because I am leaving so early in September, my original flights did not change.
Will likely stay at the Hotel Capri in Mahon (about 10 minutes from the airport) on the first night as I arrive pretty late. Then the other Mr. Yvr72 (who is arriving from the UK where he is schoolin') and I are going to drive (an hour) to the west side of the island, just beyond Ciutadella to stay at Hotel Almirante Farragut.
Looks like an amazing place - and only $97 per night (a little more than the airfare!)
Anyone else book a hotel yet? Other suggestions or do you think these places are good?

Oh how I envy you! I was looking forward to a quick weekend getaway but the only viable options after the schedule changed increased my transit time by 24 hours. Hope you enjoy the trip. Definitely report back and let us know how it went. Would love to see some pics!
