Same reason as yesterday. There is a note on his AF PNR that ticket is invalid due to pricing. He is back at DL counter now trying to sort it out. Also FYI, at some point he was also offered a full refund of what he paid for. I think I am beginning to see what DL is doing here.

He needs to figure out who put the notation in the PNR. If it was DL, well, DL can delete it or revise it, and everything should be okay. If it was AF, things might be more complicated.
OMG - this just in. He's at DL counter and was told that an authorized refund had been issued. THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE.
What's unbelievable is that he needs to go back to JFK again to find out. It would have been upsetting, but understandable, if DL simply issued him a refund days/weeks prior to travel. Why the runaround before refund?
The reason why he went back to JFK today is because:
1. DL called to confirm that his flights have been OK'ed.
2. Expedia emailed him a new revised itinerary with the following wording:
We have received notice from Delta Air Lines that changes have been made to your itinerary Number xxxxxxx. These changes could include date or time changes as well as cancellations.

Thanks for keeping us updated. What worries me is that he had no indication that this was ever going to happen. Do you know/could u ask if he ever tried to use the DL PNR before initial check in? As one FTer stated, if the e-ticket number works but the PNR does not, something fishy is up.

Even if both works, you are still not home free. The eticket could be suspended as it had happened to me with ex-CMB ticket. I only know of one website which can show the status of etickets; it only works with a few airlines (mostly OneWorld, not DL).
You cannot use a suspended ticket even though everything looks normal. I was stranded at CMB and had to purchase a new ticket back home. The suspended ticket was refunded later. Only the issuing airlines can suspend or un-suspend a ticket.
You can only check-in with all the following:
1) Valid PNR confirming your reservation (6 alphanumeric code);
2) Valid eticket showing fare paid (13 digits);
3) eTicket status is OPEN FOR USE (cannot be seen publicly).
Normally, all three are generated in one booking transaction and all is fine. But this is a special fare. Check-in agent only needs your PNR, the PNR should be linked to your eticket number and the check-in should go through if it is OPEN FOR USE. The check-in will fail, or will be printed with PAPER REQUIRED if eticket is suspended or otherwise not usable.
