When I did my only one of these trips, our bookings were UA coded pretty much as soon as they hit my itineraries. I think being a UA FFer helps.
We were able to successfully upgrade three seats using SWUs for the ORD-IAD-LHR leg the night before at SEA. On the return trip at the airport, we were able to change the routing to just LHR-ORD, dropping the IAD leg, and again upgrade all three tickets to the new business configuration.
I just returned from my ORD-IAD-LHR trip. We got excellent exit row seats on the IAD-LHR outbound and a great flight crew. The best part of flights was the free upgrades we got on the LHR-IAD return!!! I went from E+ and my Mom went from E- to Business. Very nice service, but the recliner style seating, not the backwards facing lie flats. A great trip and a very nice experience on United (which I had not flown in over 8 years since they d/c service to my prior city.)

Oh I've been meaning to post...
My wife and I took a trip on this fare in January and had a great time. Booked ORD-IAD-LHR-ORD-SFO, with a separate one-way SFO-ORD at the beginning. Due to weather we were re-routed onto the non-stop ORD-LHR.
Had good service on the UA legs. We also booked a RyanAir flight LGW-DUB (quite an experience) and BD DUB-LHR.
Not really a mileage run but used it toward a 1P challenge and got a great deal on vacation airfare. (This has worked out well for United. Directing more flights their way this year because of the experience.)
