Where did you find it? If Orbitz or AA.com, buy from them! If ITA, well you know the routine, but if it is good you should buy before it slips away. If it involves LAN, you can buy from them and probably from AA reservations too (better to call, with exact dates and flights; AA charges $10 for issuing the ticket, well worth it).

Depends on how you do it. I went SAN-DEN-SAN for two years flying Fri-Mon instead of Mon-Fri.

Interested in knowing what portion of a total fare do the other airlines receive on a 'through fare' when a mix of airlines are involved in the routing.

The following is an AC fare VOMSHWES YVR-BCN but includes flights on AC YVR-YYC-FRA, AC(LH) FRA-YVR, LH FRA-BCN and JK(LH) BCN-FRA.

YVR AC X/YYC AC X/FRA LH BCN 943.24V0MSHWES JK X/FRA AC YVR 902.67V0MSHXES NUC 1845.91 END ROE 0.98596 FARE CAD 1820.00 EQU USD 1836.00 XT 17.20CA 15.10SQ 0.80XG 10.40DE 36.40RA 6.90JD 2.50QV 356.90YQ

Total base fare is NUC 1845.91 Plus the various taxes and surcharges.

Is there a standard rule for the division of the total fare? Or is it negotiated on a route by route basis?

It's a complex matter and is a combination of both. The set of "standard rules" is the size of an encyclopedia:
http://www.iata.org/ps/publications/pmp.htm
http://www.iata.org/training/courses/talf07

But, as a general rule, the 'over-water' carrier gets to keep most of the fare...

Thanks - if I search under "Prorate Factors" there are few links elsewhere in FT and on google.

I bought a ticket from an OTA for HKG-PEK round trip and my itinerary contained the following line and I found it unreasonable:

HKG CA BJS 412.72Y1RT9 CA HKG 412.73Y1RT9 NUC825.45END ROE7.76544 XT 45I5103CN
Taxes: HKD 90G3 120HK 148XT

According to the information given in this thread, this means the ticket was issued at a fare basis Y1RT9 and the fare was NUC825.45, which is equivalent to HKD 6409.98 according to the ROE given above.

However, I got this ticket at only about HKD 1400 including taxes, and I validated it thru Air China official website and found it to be class T (heavily discounted economy), not class Y (economy), but the fare shown is also HKD 6410, which is actually the full Y fare and matches the line contained on the itinerary. What's happened actually?

Note that I didn't take the outbound segment of the flight on this itinerary, and for the return segment, I was upgraded to class E at check-in.

SmilingBoy.
S/YTO describes a stopover in Toronto, usually followed by the amount of the s/o charge (if any)
whereas X/YTO describes a transit-only/no stopover
