It isn't DPS, but CGK last year (Apr 2016) I had 3 hour layover connecting to a JAL flight and had no issues. I couldn't use transit desk and still had plenty of time to clear immigration, recheck in for flight, and get back through security in time to sit in the lounge for almost 90 minutes. I had an overnight in Jakarta earlier this month and it only took me 5 minutes to clear immigration.

What is up with that transit desk? TL;DR: For quick turns in CGK, don't rely on the transit staff to print onward boarding passes. Attempt to get them issued by competent airport staff prior to arrival.

Did a CGK turn back in July 2016. Arrived in the evening on CX. My plan was to not bother going into town since it was night time, and only around 7hrs until the JL flight. Was going to use the 24/7 airside OW lounge and catchup on work.

Anyway, I talked with the guy at the airline transfer desk. Tried to make it clear that I did not want to enter Indonesia, and wanted to transfer to the terminal. He asked for the JL boarding passes. I did not have them. After some difficulty with communication, he took my passport to some backroom, presumably to get the boarding passes.

Came back empty handed and directed me towards the immigration queue, away from the escalators that lead to the terminal. When I again asked about transferring, he insisted I clear immigration first, then head to the land-side checkin counter.

Wasn't looking to get into an extended argument with someone that spoke very little English. So I clear immigration, only to find out that the landside operations had closed for the night. Spent the next 4hrs waiting for it to open. Not much in the way of seating, and no power outlets!

I did a CGK immdiate turnaround twice a couple of years ago on a UA ticket arriving on NH. NH staff awaited me on the aircraft door, took my passport and returned five minutes later with the return boarding passes. Spent the night in the lounge. No problems whatsoever, I remember that AA had superlow fares to CGK arriving on CX as well at that time and a bunch of FTers took advantage of that. Feedbacks then confirmed that CX agents also were awaiting flyers at the aircraft door and the same procedure was adhered to. Overall a pleasant experience years ago.
I think each r/t netted us more than 40k RDMs on a $ 400.00 fare. Ah, the good old days.

This sounds exactly like what happened to me in April 2016, except they didn't take my passport. We had JAL connection. Transit desk said they could not print JAL boarding pass (even though their logo was on the sign!!) and that we had to exit and come back in.

On my last trip through I decided not to even try to use the transit desk so I got a room at the Terminal hotel. I got a room and slept for four hours or so. Complete with the little sign that basically said the water out of the tap was not safe to drink. Brushed my teeth with bottled water.

I had a look at the MLE reference in the wiki but it didn't seem too helpful. Is this too risky for me to attempt with the short turnaround time? I assume i'll be arriving and then departing on the same plane so maybe not...?

DL: Mileage run to SIN - do I have to go through customs?

Hello - I'm taking my first mileage run on DL from PHX -> SIN. No stay in SIN, just a 6 hour layover and heading back home. Since I'm coming in and out on DL and will have no checked luggage, do I need to go through customs and come back in, or can I just hang out in the terminal and re-board for the flight home?

No customs or border patrol. When you get off the plane you will be in the terminal free to wander around. You could head to Customs and Immigration if you wanted, but no need to. SIN is the best place to do a turn around. I think most people here would agree.

Since I'm coming in and out on DL and will have no checked luggage, do I need to go through customs and come back in, or can I just hang out in the terminal and re-board for the flight home?

As LTR says, this is an easy turnaround. Have a copy of your itinerary handy (security guards might randomly but nicely ask to see it if they see you sitting around at 3 in the morning), and you'll have to swing by transit desk D to answer standard "where are you coming from/going to" type security questions (I amused myself by giving the same answer to both questions) but some of the employees know about mileage runs, as SIN is probably one of the more heavily-trafficked mileage run destinations for DL. So much so that there's a massive thread on it:

It's not just an efficient place for a turnaround; it's also a great airport to visit. If you're able to sleep on the plane and can stay awake while in SIN, there is no better airport to spend 6 hours in. Even in the middle of the night. Free movie theaters, transit hotel if you want a shower or 4 hour nap, etc. The lounges don't seem especially nice because the airport itself has so much going for it. There are very good reasons SIN is rated the #1 airport in the world.

If only all mileage runs would be as nice as those to SIN! After UA abandoned the KWI/BHR
route, each and everyone of my runs was to SIN. Absolutely love it. Would do it again in a heartbeat if necessary.

Just not quite so sure I'd enjoy doing the UA1/UA2 routing as a mileage run. When I did SIN, it was, if I recall correctly, SFO-SEA-NRT-SIN outbound. Don't remember the exact return. Obviously that was when UA was flying SEA-NRT. All UA metal.

My toughest MR was to MNL. Ohmygosh that would not be an airport I need to ever again see in my lifetime. You could easily imagine, with a reasonable chance it might be true, that some of the various security people you passed through were looking for bribes. There was just no reason whatsoever for three different people haphazardly screening me (and everyone else), coming and going. Curiously, nobody cared that I was doing an out & back.

I still remember fondly my first flight into and out of SIN though. Could not believe all the 380s in one place. Or such a clean airport.

About to book IAD-ZRH-GVA-IAD.

IAD-ZRH leaves Friday at 5pm ET, gets into Zurich 8am Saturday their time. Leave Zurich for Geneva (on LX) at 9:30am. Short flight. Get into Geneva at 10:20am, leave Geneva for Dulles at 11:45am on the UA direct.

I've heard the Germans are easy going when it comes to MRs, are the Swiss the same way? Any possible problems that could arise from this? Besides big delays of course, because that could ruin a MR anywhere, anytime.

Arriving on TG319 from BKK (12.25pm)
Departing on TG320 going back to BKK ( 13.30pm)

What to expect and is it possible or not at all? I would be on two separate tickets.

Could be tough, did an airside doh-ktm-kul just to test and it wasnt ideal. But there is a transfer and security area just before entering the immigration building, which opens up at the gates on the departure side. You could request if TG could meet you there or have a BP ready at that security door.
