I was able to get $1,600 EU round-trip from FRA. I'm thrilled with this. Will help with 2017 EXP status and I get to check a big one off the bucket list! Thanks OP.

Do you mean €1600? Or $1600?

Although still the currently-scheduled start date, it is possible that the inaugural service will be delayed to February 2017.

Thanks. I spotted EDI-AKL rtn yesterday before the thread was posted, but for $2565 and, thanks to FT, I have now booked PSA-DOH-AKL // AKL-DOH-EDI for $1806 @ Easter 2017 through QR website. Happy days!

After searching around for quite awhile I didn't see anything better for price & routing than PSA-DOH-AKL // AKL-DOH-FRA. Who really knows what aircraft they will have on the AKL route? Probably QR doesn't even know now as they are experiencing delivery date problems with Airbus. But this is a great fare and I pulled the trigger.

We absolutely know; it's going to be the 777-200LR.

With QR, you never know, lol. It all depends on how His Excellency wakes up in the morning.

Does the A350 even have the range to fly 17hours? I thought it would have to be a specially modified 777-200 plane to fly that distance

Yes, it was specifically designed to compete in the ultra long haul routes.

Excatly - doing the same, except we're coming back via Munich - and that's on the A350 - well on the current schedule anyway.

The DOH-AKL route is definitely the 777-200LR - the LR is a bit of a giveaway. I don't think the A380 has the range to do this flight - certainly not full, and not from the heat in Doha. In fact, I think the DOH-AKL is going to be the longest scheduled flight worldwide when it operates - and until SQ reinstates non stop SIN-NYC.

I'll be travelling with Mrs BBA so no problem with the 2-2-2. And really looking forward to spending almost two weeks in NZ over Easter next year. ^

Sure it does - it's one of the positive selling features of the aircraft, and something that figures pretty heavily in QR's network expansion. So the delivery delays mean a bit of a headache swapping the limited number of long-haul aircraft in the fleet to cope with that expansion. Something might have to give, but it could be frequencies rather than route sacrifice.

I'm not sure the A350 has the range to do DOH-AKL. That's 8,000 nm, and the A350 range is just short of that. the 777-200LR has a range that's about 1000nm more.

It would be quite tight with pax and cargo onboard. A350 range is about 8000NM with a normal load, and DOH-AKL is 7850NM.

Only the A350-900ULR would have the range to operate DOH-AKL non-stop. I do not believe than any of Qatar's A350s are the ultra long range variety - Airbus says that none of the ULR types are being delivered until next year on current schedules.
